Not all the time.

I was on a flight one day where our P-3C was flying off the wing of a Bear-F (the Soviet version of our P-3C). We had two F-15s out there with us who kept getting in our way.
One of the F-15s decided to get cute and get up underneath the Bear-F and angle his nose up so it looked like he was about to blast the Bear-F out of the sky while his wingman took pictures. This eagle jockey didn't know that unlike the Bear-D they intercepted more often, the Bear-F is a subhunter, and was out there dropping their sonobuoys (about six feet long, 10" in diameter, and weighs quite a bit). We tried to warn the F-15s the Bear-F was about to start dropping sonobuoys, but the wing wipers didn't seem to understand the danger and kept playing around.
A few seconds later, the Bear-F started dropping buoys and the first one out went flying towards that F-15. The Eagle driver about stood that bird on its tail trying to slow down and the buoy missed his nose by inches. He winged over and moved off about 2k yards from the Bear-F.

That guy had to seriously clean out his underwear after that close encounter. On the upside those two wing wipers kept their distance from both of our planes after that.
