Factory 440s in 73s,question for the historians.....

Guys, 440 posted a cool 73 440 car video. Car is a four speed Rally car. In researching my factory 4 speed 73 Rally car, I THOUGHT I read that Dodge limited the 4 speed cars to the 400 engines that year, is that correct. IF that is correct , did it also apply to international exported cars as well or were they allowed to order whatever they wanted....thanks..

The 340 (available only on the Rallye), 360 (2-barrel only), 400 (low power 2-barrel/single exhaust and high performance 4-barrel/dual exhaust) and 440 remained as options for that year.

I also thought 400 was largest to get a 4 speed? I have a 73 rally u code 440 magnum that is a pistol grip 4 speed but fender tag shows auto.

You are correct in that, 1973 Chargers with 440 engines were automatics only, and the biggest engine available with a manual was the 400. The export question is a good one.

You are correct, the 440 was not available with a four speed transmission after 1972.

The parts book also shows only the 400 having a 4 speed.

Sorry, you could get a 340 with a 4 speed but not a 440, but then you probably got that.

Ok, yalls paperwork pretty much confirms autos in 440s only for 73. Builderguys parts manual book shows a 225 , coloume shift for exports. Can we conclude IF the 440 manual for exports would prolly be listed there , if that was available ? One thing you guys have taught me was , if you had the right connections, Chrysler would build you just about anything.....

I own the Charger in that video. No export mystery here guys. It was an original 400, 4 speed car and from California.
By the time I got it, the 400 was long gone. It has a 1977 HP 440 block. I know the narrator of the video stated it was a rare car. That didn't come from me. He was over the top excited that I let him sit in the car. A very nice fellow. To my surprise he did an awesome video of the car.

Great car Ray, and the video was awesome. Very inspiring to me to finish mine. As with yours, my 400 and 4 speed was long gone when I acquired mine and a PO had stuck in a 727. I now have a 833 and all the linkage to go back in. 440 block and heads are at the machine shop and I m about to pull the dash. All said, I bet one day we hear about a factory 440 , 4 speed that snuck thru in a 73......never say never they say.....thanks all

So look what I found. .i am a believer that only 400s got a 4 speed in 73 and 74 but read the fine print in this rallye ad!

Great post! I believe that explains my 1973 400 block with an actual forged crank drilled for a manual transmission that I inherited from a friend 20 years ago. also, I salvaged a 1975 rallye Charger 440 automatic in 1992, but the engine had a forged crank drilled for a stick in it. I read somewhere all rallye 440 cars thru 74 had forged cranks, although all were automatics.
