The shifter is a factory '70 console, automatic shifter. The objective is, I want to get the shifter arm/stalk stripped and re-chromed. The question; is there a way to remove the cable that is inside the arm? The cable that I'm referring to actuates the tab for the gate lockout when you push the button on the shift knob? I need to remove it so that it doesn't get ruined during the plating process. Anybody with any insight on this?

Remove the cotter pin and spring at the bottom of the handle. Spray down inside with some free it or other lubricant, then tap downward lightly on the tab for the gate and the cable with the white cover should come out. I have had a few through the years that i had to soak for a few days and then had some that where corroded inside even on good looking handles that never would come out. FYI since you are going to rechrome the handle i would be certain before spending the money to be sure you have a 70 handle, it is technically one year 70 only b-body

Thanks for the input. I have the handle stripped all the way down, just couldn't get the cable out. After reading your response I now have it soaking in PB Blaster. It's the original shifter from the car, so it is a '70, but what's the difference that makes a '70 shifter one year only? There are a few '70 only parts on B bodies but I didn't know that the shifter was one of them.
Thanks again for your input, it is very much appreciated, hopefully the penetrating oil will do the trick.

Yes the common misconception that all console auto shifters from 66-70 are the same is incorrect, but the remakes want you to think that so they can sell more as one size fits all. If you check your Chrysler parts book you will see the handles have different part numbers 66-68 A B & C body are one handle, 69 handle is by itself and 70B handle is also by itself. The handles are bent different, have different heights and also have different size inner cables and guides

Thanks for the information on the shifters. I never looked at the part numbers and I guess I never realized they were different, one more thing to store in my brain, I wonder what this information is going to displace. I got the cable out yesterday, thanks to your advice. I soaked it in PB Blaster over night then used a brass drift and a tack hammer and tapped it out, it work like a charm. Thank you.
