Hlep just got my 73 RR and I knew goning in she had no fender tag, but the vin decoded and so what..... blah blah. But I would really like to get ahold of one, correct or close just because there are two holes in the fender where I know it's supposed to go. Also more bad news no build sheets anywhere! I contacted the previos owners going back as far as I could trace the title, but have had no sucess, HELP!!!!!

this is a discussion that comes up quite a bit....

from what you have to work with, it would probably be impossible to have a correct fender tag made. Anything that you do have made will stick out as a reproduction and may bring up more questions than it's worth. Even people with the best intentions that have a tag made are questioned as to what they changed or omitted in order to perpetuate a fraud. The range of opinions on remade tags are wide and can be very vocal.

Some people will have a tag made with new wording, such as "remade" to replace the VIN or VON number on the tag. This seems to be a nice compromise.

The bottom line...there is no legit long term reason, other than owner vanity, to have a tag made without using a damaged original tag as the template. Making a new tag involves guessing which leads to questions as to the legitimacy of the car.

My two cents....

i could live with that but i cnat even find someone to make a repro tag? any leads

I had one reproduced several years ago. I also had no build sheet. I found the guy at the Mopar Nats and he looked at my car and asked me about it. I proved to him that the VIN tag and the body numbers matched, and told him that the air grabber and wing were not original. He said if I wanted a tag other than exactly as the car came from the factory he would have told me to take a hike. He wouldn't normally reproduce a missing tag without a build sheet to back it up but because he saw my car and was honest he made an exception.

No legitimate vendor should make you a tag without a build sheet or seeing your car. Either get a tag off a boneyard car and screw it on just for looks, or fill in the holes. That's my suggestion, anyway. For that matter, I have a tag off a 67 B-body I got from a wreck in Texas many years ago and if it is the same screw facing I would sell it to you for a few bucks.

How about using the IBM card, if that is available for your car?

Just "because", how about a blank plate or one with just the VIN, spaced out correctly?

i would love one that was the oirignal build for the car, in fact that would be my preference, got any contact info for that guy I appreciate it, thanks. anyone got a boneyard tag for sale, in chicago boneyards are few and far between and there arent many with older cars, according to chrysler historical museum those IBM tags werent kept for these years but if you have any leads that would be great too, thanks guys

just an update trim tags in buffalo grove IL. which is just about 15 miles from me in Chicago. Will make a repro tag, just like anything there is a chance for abuse, but they were pretty thurough and asked for a copy of the registration and pictures/ seemed a bit pricey 235 hope the quality is there will keep you guys posted.

Got it

finally got the fender tag and it looks great! trim tags in buffalo grove il did it it took about 3 weeks but was worth the wait it is as close to what the car was produced as i could get. This should be painted body color right?

Jimmy, I know you are proud of the car and tag and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are at least two mistakes on the tag. There may be more; I'm not sure of one thing. I know you trusted, and paid, them to do it right, but they made mistakes.

This is one reason why you shouldn't have repo tags made from scratch. Repo tags should only be made using an original tag as a template.

i ran it trhu one of the online decoders and the only thing that didn quite jive was the paint code but imached on another one? if there are mistaks that they made belive me for what i paid they will make a new one

what are they?

i could live with that...

You were cautioned as to the problems with repop tags. You didn't want accurate, you wanted 'close' and were OK with any controversy a new tag generated. You asked for input on a public message board and I gave it both times.

It doesn't matter how many or what the mistakes are, you got what you wanted and paid for. You should be happy.

i am happy and i did post it up here for input this will never be a number matchng all original 100 point car but it is still cool as hell, but you started an opinoin and didnt complete it so i was just curious and if there is a super blatant mistake like the vin is wrong os something like that then i would like that correct? but thanks for any input or criticism
thanks

My GUESS would be that what Doug is NOT saying is that he has no interest in educating anyone on how to make a repo tag harder to detect from an original regardless of what YOUR intentions are. It is not the current guy with all the good intentions but the next guy or anyone after that THINKS he is buying a car with an original tag that many people worry about.

that scool i can understand that and maybe a few defects well prevent that in the future, well Ilike the tag it fills the holes in my fender and looks good. Thanks guys
