Fender tag decode

I’ve searched the forum to see if there was a resource for deciding these. I’ve also searched the web, but all my search results come up with people posting pics of their tag for decoding. So, I’m posting my fender tag. Can anyone tell me more about my car or give me a source to do it myself?

We'd need more info as to what car you have as well as better pic's of the numbers. No online decoder is 100% accurate but it gets you started. Members here will help dial it in.

One way to make them easier to read is to take the tags off & take pictures of them. Then you flip the image so that they're easier to read, like this.

A 72 Coronet 2 dr with a 318 & a 904. Okay, Charger... I would expect a 29 instead of a 23.... But then again I would expect a X instead of a W.. W was always Coronet till apparently 71 it became Coronet and Charger... But Charger was always 29 for sport roof...

When I was younger back in the 80’s... I always thought the ‘71-‘74 Chargers were just 2-door Coronets.

It wasn’t til about 5 years ago, that I looked at a VIN on one, and it confirmed it.

Starting in 71, the Dodge midsized (previously the W Coronets and X Chargers) lines were consolidated. The X VIN designation was dropped and all cars carried the W VIN.

Two doors (W*2*) keep the Charger badges while four doors (W*4*) got the Coronet badging.

The X VIN code indicating the Charger nameplate returned in 75 while the two and four door Coronets retained the W.

So.... 71-74 two door Dodge midsize is a Charger and four door is a Coronet.

Never been big on 71 & Up B bodies... I thought there was a two door 71-4 Coronet.. Guess not...

So I was asked a question at a car show this weekend that is related to this topic. A guy asked why my original window sticker shows “Coronet Charger” instead of only Charger? I never noticed and I am not sure. All of the WS window stickers I googled have only Charger. I did see one other Grand Spaulding window sticker with both trim lines on the sticker. Odd, so did the dealership type the sticker or the factory?

I don’t know the technical answer, but I’ve always thought of the Charger as an offshoot or spawn of the Coronet. I’m sure someone will come along with a better explanation.

You also have a sizeable chunk of the Inspector Tag intact.

Can you post a picture off the entire sheet? The answer may lay in the details.

I worked in a junkyard back in the late 80’s. And one of my jobs was to retrieve the cars on a list to be crushed. I lost count of how many Gold with tan vinyl top and interior ‘71-‘74 Chargers that went in. They seemed to all be bench seat, column shift, standard square cluster, 318 2bbl’s.

I only worked there for a little while but, I never saw a ‘68-‘70 come in.

It’s a WS23 car So I don’t think any additional info on the sticker will provide context.
Does anyone know if the factory or the dealer typed the window sticker?
