Hey gent's if any of you gurus can give me a hand with this, I need some help.
I need to replace my fender tag. Years ago, (and I mean years ago) I noticed one of the screws fell out my fender tag. So me thinking I was sooo smart, I took the other screw out rather than replace the missing one, so I could keep the tag in a safe place. I have torn my place apart looking for it to no avail. Stupid me.

Below is a copy of my build sheet, rubbing of the VIN and my attempt to decode it. Can anybody tell me if I have it correct?

Can anybody tell me if I have it correct?

You do not.

Even if people have the best of intentions, remade tags remain a very controversial subject.

What was coded, where it was coded and when it was coded on the tag varied by plant and even during the production year.

If you truly have your heart set on having a new tag made, I suggest you do a lot of homework.

Wow, nice. You would think I was asking for the holy grail. I know there are a couple mistakes like the decor package. I'll get it figured out. Thanks for nothing.

You should have thanked him for the correct answer ( Can anybody tell me if I have it correct? ) ,not what you wanted to hear,he answered you're question !!

You are correct, he did indeed.

I'm curious as to why it's so controversial if I have all the other documentation to support what the car was born with. The tag was lost because of my own stupidity, I just want to fill in this detail.

Let's try this, what did I do incorrectly and what do I need to do to make the fender tag match my build sheet? (Which does match the car). Or perhaps I should just put whatever looks good to me on it and totally screw it up.

Any assistance is appreciated.

OK Boys, the following is the best I can do.

But after thinking about it, I'll have the following stamped also just for you guys and shows.

Let me know your thoughts.

Let me know your thoughts.

1) I think that you doing the homework and finding other tags from 68 RR's built about that same time at the LA plant to ensure your tag is correct would be more satisfying than relying on Internet posts. That way when you pay someone to stamp it, you will know you are getting your money's worth. You'll never question if it is right or not.

2) The second one is quicker, easier, more self satisfying and a waste of good money.

You're welcome.

1. I have already spent enough time on this topic, have other things to do.
2. As I see it, they're both a waste of money. The second one is at least fun.

I purchased this car in 78, will never sell it, don't want to falsify it and I have the BS. It's just tin tag for crying out loud. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering how "taboo" this topic is. Good to know.

Funny how replacing a tin tag on a car is a no-no but replacing every other part on the car is OK with you guys.

True!

I have now been through most of the major resto threads..

Watched guys being congratulated for taking MOST of the original metal away, and creating AMD metal works of art. End results are amazing, and I appreciate all the skill needed to do it, but its NOT the car that rolled of the factory floor anymore.

But try and change that last few square inches of metal in the fender tag, and the KRAKEN is released! I am sorry but this continually dumbfounds me. What am I missing?? ;)

My thoughts? Am I missing something here? You lost the fender tag. You ask FBBO is your numbers are correct. Someone gives it to you straight and says no. You get snippy and start telling people to kiss your ***.

Here's an idea. Make a fender tag out of Play Doh. Stamp whatever you want on it. Problem solved.

LOL...

Nice suggestion. Flexible and practical. One day the car can be a 71 hemi 'Cuda convertible, the next a 63 MW, the next day a Mach 1. That will screw up those damned old purists for sure.

It's pretty simple really....Changing a fender doesn't change what the car is as the fender is not a historic document of the car. A Coronet fender is a Coronet fender whether it's on a /6 four door or a Hemi Super Bee. Changing the tag changes the underlying documentation as to how the car was actually built. Changing a quarter panel retains the value of the car. Falsifying a fender tag to reflect more desirable models or options improperly inflates the value of the car. Improperly/falsely made tags make people question whether or not the car is actually what is represented.

I think www.datatags.com can do it. I think they have a form you fill out with the information you have from the build sheet and/or what is on the car. Things like color of the upholstery, color of the vinyl top, size of the radiator and so forth.

I'm told a purist can spot a remade one in a second, but who cares. If you have the build sheet to prove you are not making a silk purse out of a sow's ear you have nothing to fear.

Just get a new tag made and you'll find the old one right away. Never fails.

This is so true.

The amount of money outlaid to replace the tag will be directly proportional to the time it takes to find it after spending the money to replace it in the first place.

No sh@t, don't think that hasn't crossed my mind. I know it's here, someplace. Been looking for 6 years.

Nobody is snippy Pabster, in fact I find the whole topic quite comical, and not just on this site, which is why I'm going with the joke tag. Everybody wins, right?
