Fender Tag question

We own a '68 Coronet R/T made in the LA plant. On the lower row of the fender tag, righthand side, is a 6 digit number. I think that this is the shop order number. I believe that the first 2 numbers for a '68 should be 19. Galen Govier looked over our car at Mopars on the Mississippi and pointed out to me that our 6 digit number begins with 77. He said that indicates something unusual, but he didn't know what. Can anyone tell me what the 77 designates?

That is the sales order (SO) number that comes from the paper sales order from when the car was ordered from the dealer or created in house for a sales bank car. GG was probably refering to how high a number it is compared to what he has seen in the past for sales order numbers. It could be that it was built with some kind of special "out of plant" equipment done by and out sid vendor. Beginning in 1969 they used some letter codes for these types of things such as sun roofs and also cars like T/A model cars. I don't know what they used in the 1968 model year but this could be an example.

Does the car have any special type of equipment that was not available on the factory option list?

I can't see anything on the car that isn't on the factory option list. It is a Coronet R/T that has the white/black interior package and doesn't have a vinyl roof, but I doubt that it would be that uncommon.

The car has an early build date (Oct. 31, 1967) if that makes any difference.

Not to highjack this thread, but I have a 69 charger and what code on the fender tag or on the vin tells me if it is an SE or not?

Thanks guys. I saw decoders like that on the net, but it doesn't say if it's an SE or not. My vin starts with XP and for the price class of P that is supposed to stand for Premium (i think), but does Premium mean that it is an SE. Lots of these decoders give great info, but are a bit unclear on a few of the details.

The SE was an option package NOT a special model Charger and is not reflected in their V.I.N. All 69 base model Chargers begin XP, R/Ts are XS, and 500s and Daytonas are XX.

thanks 696pack. I guess I need the original bill of sale to see if it was ordered or not which I don't have..just the build sheet and all that has are codes and codes galore.

You are close....

Cars were built for different purposes. Some could be fleet cars, some could be dealer demos, some could be for car magazines/publicity/shows, some could be a truly special order car, like a special color paint, some could be lease cars or some were package cars.

Typically, one of these, or other, special purposes was indicated in the Sales Order (SO) number. The coding changed from year to year but most regular production SO numbers, tend to end in the 600000 range. The upper ranges (7**-8**-9**) are used to help indicate a special built or purpose car or, possibly, special shipping routing for a car.

So we're pretty safe in guessing the car in question was built for some reason outside of normal production. It's proably not that big of a deal. It could have been something as simple as an employee lease car.

I have several 68 tags with 'special' SO numbers but I do not know what 77* stands for. Check the broadcast sheet, if possible, for hints on why it got a special SO number. You may find some sort of sales code.

By the way....is the car in question white over white?
