So started some firewall work. Noticed the “new”firewall I got has one vent. I’m changing it to a ac firewall so is this the difference between ac and non ac firewalls? I heard the firewalls between ac and non ac were slightly different.

I can say with certainty that the lower pic (yellow car) is what an AC firewall looks like in a gen 3

Yes that’s what I’m replacing mine with. So I guess the ac firewalls only had one vent?

Which likely means, to convert my car over I’ll need a new heater box too?

not sure what you mean by one vent but yes, you will need the ac heater box as it is very different from the non-ac box along with the ac/heater controls.
That being said, you don't need to install the AC core in the heater box.
Without the AC core you would have to add a block-off plate for where the AC lines pass through the firewall
The fan motor is also different. That's the large round/triangle shaped hole on the passenger side. Everything on the drivers side should be the same.

Ok thanks.

Just pointing out though, the other pick is my originally.

You can see there’s a drivers side air vent on my original non ac wall.

On the yellow new firewall there’s only a passenger side air vent.

Good grief, I did not realize the firewalls were different. I wonder if it is easier to use a Vintage Air A/C kit than to replace that section of the firewall?

100% if that was the only issue. But look at the pics of my firewall. It's swisscheese. To do all those patches and stuff would've been way harder than replacing my firewall. I probably would've got a non ac firewall if I could find one, then my heater box would've still worked and all. But the AC wall was all I could get. So thats what I got to work with.
