I recently ran into an issue with the turn signals and tail lights on my 68 GTX. My turn signals, back up lights, tail lights, brake lights and parking lights are all acting erratically and work intermittently. I've done a bunch of research on here and also gone through my FSM. I've replaced the back-up bulbs, tail light bulbs and parking bulbs (they were all old and I figured it was time to get new ones in), cleaned the plugs for the bulbs and tried to clean up the outer portion so they would get good contact with the housings. Considering they're still not working right, I believe the problem is with the turn signal switch.

Now to my question. Is there a plug-in flasher switch for the turn signals in the dash? I was talking with my friend today who is generally very knowledgeable about these cars and he said he thought there was a plug-in flasher switch for the turn signals. I know there's a plug-in type switch for the hazard lights and that it operates separately from the turn signals and tail/brake lights (the last time I checked the hazards were working properly, which is why I thought it was the turn signal switch in the column). Can you guys help clarify this? Is there a second flasher switch for the turn signals that might be causing my issues?

Thanks in advance.

Jack

Jack - there is a flasher up under the dash for the turn signals.i had a bad one on my 69 bee that would make some odd things happen with rear lights.simple fix.just look up under the dash.mine was on the right side of the steering column

Thanks so much, Bee383. I'll be heading home soon to check it out and see if I can find it...

If you still have your original 68 wiring, might consider also checking the bulkhead connector at the fire wall. All the current for most everything goes in and out there. Over time they burn up, melt, corrode, this too can cause all kind of gremlins.

I'm having issues finding the switch for some reason. I assume it looks something like this:

I'm not seeing it though. The FSM says the switch is mounted to the "ash receiver housing" but I can't get my head up high enough to really see it (and couldn't feel it either). Does anyone have a picture of the back of the dash so I can find this thing? For some reason the FSM has a rear view of the dash for the Valiant and the Fury but not the Belvedere.

Thanks guys.

Feel the bottom lip of dash, working from steering column to glove box. On '67 Satellite, it was below and to right of radio. It has clips that hold it in place.

Just so you know that turn signal flasher only has to do with the turn signal lights. If you have park lites and tail lite problems that flasher has no effect on them or on brake lites and back-up lites. It sounds like you could have a ground problem or a bulkhead problem. But it cant hurt to replace the turn signal flasher as if you have turn signal problems it can fix that. Ron

Thanks for the help everyone. I finally found the flasher. It was mounted in a little receptacle on the driver's side of the ash tray. The problem was I couldn't actually see or feel it when I first looked for it. Last night I put my phone under the dash and took pictures working my way along from the steering column until I eventually found it. It seemed to solve the problem at first but then all power went out inside of the car. I'm working on that next and will likely be posting questions on that issue soon. Thanks again.

Not sure if this applies to your 68, but on my 70, the power for the rear lights goes through the turn signal cam in the steering column. Intermittent brake lights and turn signals would make that a def suspect. Had the issue when I bought mine. New cam fixed it right up. Not expensive but you do need to pull the steering wheel. Again not sure if it applies to your 68 though. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I think I have everything sorted out with the lights now. Looks like the turn signal flasher caused most of my issues. Of course, I found new, bigger problems while dealing with the lights. Anyway, I'll be starting a new post on that shortly. Thanks again for the help, everyone.

By the way, a real easy way to find the turn signal flasher is to remove the 4 screws holding the ashtray housing in. Takes about 3 minutes, drop the ashtray down/out of the way and you'll see the flasher for the turn signals right in there.

I'm curious what the new issues are you were referring to, because I think I have a very similar problem...
