have a 74 roadrunner with 400 i am thinking about replacing the automatic with a 4 or 5 speed just looking for some opinions i am in the restoration stage also have a 440 I could put into it should i keep it stock or do some changes

Personal preference. Keep auto and go 440 if me. Unless Passon delivers on the 5 speed he has been bragging about for 4 years. Good luck.

My 69 Bee was an automatic, my 68 GTX (signature) is a 4 speed. The 4 speed is more fun in town but I think my race times have slowed somewhat but thay could be me as I am several years older this time around.

I don't drive no stinky automatics .... so...

I got a buck that says none of you 4 speed guys drive it over 2,000 miles a year. Round the block-ers.

I'd take that bet Dennis .. my truck is a 5 speed manual and I love it even with the 20-30 minute traffic I set in every day to get into the base and I drove thousands of miles in 4 speeds and daily drove them for years and will again. The used cars i drove in Europe were all manuals and drove them every day for 9 years I spent over there on the right hand side car and a 5 speed Mustang I had for several years.

What motivated this? Manual trans 'too difficult' or something???

5 or 6 speed. No sense in limiting yourself to 4 nowadays.

Some not all here love to dream about "bangin gears. Few actually drive one. I like my 4 (5 speed Tremec) Speed but would not make a change if I purchased an automatic car. Point and stab and just walk it in stop and go traffic like we have here in LaLa land. Besides, if you get on Passon's waiting list, your grandchildren will be old before you get it.

Forgot: My daily driver is the 6 speed manual tracpac modern Hemi Challenger. (Secret: Gets less miles a year than the big block).

I think I see Dennis's point in heavy city traffic a manual can be a bear, esp with a stiff clutch and definitely if the steering is manual but I'm not in LA or Chicago or New York and don't drive in STL often with a manual trans vehicle so I think that has a big factor. Out in the sticks here in the Metro STL area, which has corn or bean fields and normal highway and interstate traffic it's fun to me.

As a GIRL, I not only drive exclusively manual transmissions and prefer them, my daily driver is a 6 speed (bought BRAND new now has over 20,000 miles), the daily driver prior was 5 speed and the one prior was also 5 speed. That takes me back at least 12 years and I can still continue backwards back to my 4 speed Pinto (73).

For my 70 coronet SRT-8 project, my wonderful hubby, Kellycom, took the time to find me a 6 speed manual Tremec to pair with my 6.1l hemi.

Yeah, I DON'T drive automatics

I love to drive manual trans rigs except in heavy traffic. Trouble is, I usually manage to get carried away and break 'em. I just can't help myself. I think I'll leave the TF in my car. It's been a long time since I've blown up an automatic.

Go Tampa! Bet the OP is glad this got this started.

Terror is being in a Pinto at a Toll booth - with an Audi behind you.

(Sorry about the Bucaneers though)

I have both automatics and manuals. My daily driver is a 2007 Mustang with a 5 speed. It is fun to bang the gears, but if I am stuck in stop and go traffic it does get old after a while. Having said that, once you get going shifting yourself is just so much more fun, so it balances out.

I had an automatic in my truck, and would prefer an automatic in a truck. For a fun car, manual all the way!!! :blob1:

If it was my choice I would go with the 4 speed. I changed mine from an auto to a manual. If your car is going to be used just for racing, would consider an automatic for more consistency.

Sooooo...........If you are a woman, how do you multi task while driving a manual trans? Drinking coffee, eating breakfast and putting on makeup while driving? Just wondering.

my truck is a 5 speed dodge ram and my car is a 4 speed 63 Plymouth that's all I drive stick shifts
