How and with what should I coat my frame connectors and torque boxes before I have them welded in. I currently have the parts coated in Royal Purple Maxfilm to protect them but when I clean them up for welding how should they be coated? Thanks, Al
I would paint the back/underside with Por15, paint, ospho, whatever except for the edges where you will weld. Make sure any edges that are going to be welded get both sides coated with weld-thru primer. Then top coat as usual.
Anything you do to the inside will be overkill anyhow but I agree POR15 would be a good choice and would only top coat the outside after the install. It's funny the extent we go to to protect everything we possibly can (I'm guilty). After opening up my 40+ year old cross member last weekend and finding it to be perfect with only surface rust after all of those years makes me wonder.......... How long will they last now that the car lives a pampered life?
