For whatever reason when I jack my 67 charger up in the air and spin the passenger side tire it has severe drag on it. I tried to loosen the brake adjuster (power drums) thinking it was too tight but that didnt do anything.

So i removed the tire and the drum falls right off.
I thought the front drums were press fit to the front hub and had to be removed from the hub with a puller and/or some heat.

Everything looks fine.

When I put the front drum back on and adjust the breaks where they need to be, making sure the hub bearing is adjusted correctly, the tire spins free with light drag from the front brakes.

Problem comes when I torque the tire on.

Again, the passenger side tire is almost impossible to spin by hand.

only when I remove the tire does it pop free.

I thought maybe the backin plate was rubbin the drum but that is not the case.

So i want to just buy another front passenger drum and hub assembly but every parts house I go to order from shows the drum without the hub.

is this just a generic pic and you actually get the drum, pressed on the hub or not?

Ive only worked on 10 or so front drum brake cars and I can tell you that everyone of them had the hub come off with the drum.....

Thanks.

You'll have to get a used hub and drum! Probably when some one pulled the drum off of the hub it was bent, and not setting square on the hub face!

Happy 4th! I'm guessing you have 11" drum up front. The hub can be from a 10" drum. They look the same, but they are not. There is about .250" difference in the two. The 11"hub is sits farther out than the 10" does from the brake backplate. Hope this helps, Pat

Thanks Pat but I would think the brakes wouldnt work right if the car had 11 inch drum on one side but I will definitely take it off and measure it next time Im up where the car is stored at.

thanks.

Dan

The lug studs have a shoulder that fits into the drum's holes and are then swedged to make them tight at the factory. A lot of people have ruined drums thinking they can just press them out and many have done this thinking they can go to larger drums just by doing a swap. There is a special swedge cutter for replacing worn out drums but most just install new drums without installing new studs and swedging them onto the new drums. It'll work fine doing that so long as everything is right. Do you see any rubbing on the drums other than the braking surface? Look closely even where it rides close to the backing plate. Sometimes you can have a rub that's not real obvious where...
