i have a new tank in my 63 440 and a new fuel line as well, were should i put a filter...

I have mine about 10 inch's from where fuel line gos in the carb..

Should be on the pressure side of the pump.

like this but not that kind of a filter.... cartner_pummpp.jpg

mine is on the suction side of the fuel pump (70 RR ) sitting close to the K-Frame. you want to filter out the crap BEFORE it gets to the fuel pump .

never put a cellulose type filter on the suction side of a pump. a 100 micron screen is ok. i've seen pumps pull them apart. it also creates vapor lock.

no vapor lock and no problems here:headbang:

thats why the factory put socks in the tank.

What you are showing is not a filter. It's a vapor separator. The filter would still go in that approximate location though.
if i put my filter where that separater is, do i just go up alittle with rubber hose then steel line to the carb.. or hose the rest of the way up...

The line to the carb is definitely steel and it terminates somewhere below the alternator. I think a short hose coupling after the vapor separator to attach the filter and you're good to go. I personally like to keep rubber hose to a minimum.

My fuel filter is kind of resting on the intake and on the side of the valve cover. As shown in the pics. This can't be right, can it? Shouldn't it be suspended ?

Agreed. Pressure (carb) side of the pump. Here's mine:

Here's mine. Just plumbed it the other day. The filter is a summit 40 micron unit my dad gave me.image.jpg

Originally the filter was under the alt. with steel line up to the carb.

Steel line is 3/8" cut from 48" pieces I bought at Napa Auto Parts. Used a tubing bender and flare tool (cheap at Harbor Freight). The filter (cleanable 40 micron stainless mesh) and AN fittings are from Summit. Thanks for the compliment.
