How difficult is it to replace a fuel gauge in a non rally dash in a 1970 b body without removing the dash? I am replacing the main harness and the circuit board. I am assuming the fuel gauge is bad too so I'm considering just replacing that too since the harness and circuit board will already be removed. Aside from the pain associated from being upside down, how does the gauge come out? Can it be done from the engine side of the dash?

Reach up underneath the dash and disconnect the speedo cable first ( there is a clip that you pinch that disconnects the cable), then you remove the cluster by just removing some screws and trim, then pulling the cluster forward and remove the wires from the amp meter and circuit board. That is it, very easy to do.

So if I am following you correctly, the temp, fuel, and ammeter are attached to the circuit board and not attached to the dash? Do i have to remove some frame structure to get the cluster out from the engine side? looks tight. Thanks for your input.

Nevermind. I see that the cluster comes out towards the wheel.

You do not have screws in the foam pad that needs to come out?

At least on my rallye dash, you have to drop the steering column (not out of the car, but remove the bracket from underneath it). Undo the gage cluster screws & slowly start pulling it out, removing the amp gage wires on the right side first, then work you way right to left removing (& labelling) each wire. The whole cluster comes out & you have access to everything. Install in reverse order. Not too-too bad of a job (I just did it myself)
