Anyone have a recommendation on what size fuel lines to use for a 500 inch 440 with 6pack, ootb rpm performer heads, 550 lift hyd roller? est 550-580 hp?

3/8" should be plenty for about 120 GPH at 5 PSI.

Thanks Meep, Any advantage in elec vs mech pump?

line size

3/8-1/2 max
Electric plump is better no heat issue's with the fuel-no vapor lock, more pressure

Why do some people use both? Wouldn't running electric through the mechanical negate the temperature advantage of running the electric?

this is just a thought but it may be a safety net. if electric fails mech will keep the car running or opposite view may be prefer mech but use the elec for gauruntee of enough fuel flow

Either one will move the fuel if installed and working properly. Electric pumps push better than pull so a low restriction inlet with good gravity feed is best. I'll agree with the mechanical pumps disadvantage of heat conductivity and with today's gas that is more of a concern. Another thing that might be a disadvantage with mech pumps is sustained high RPM performance. I have to wonder if the internal valves can react fast enough to keep fuel moving.

The idea of running both I'm sure has to do with helping to supply fuel to the inlet of the mech pump because somewhere along the line someone thought it was beneficial or it just sounded good. I suppose if the mech pump has issues then adding the electric will band-aid the problem. The reality is all the fuel in the tank can be pumped by five fuel pumps through a 1" tube at 20 PSI but will still enter the carb bowls through two holes that are .100" in diameter (assuming a single 4 BBL).

Yes, putting cool fuel in contact with a hot surface will do just what you said.

I've been running the Mopar Performance high performance mechanical fuel pumps for many years and have had zero problems with them. Part #P4007039AB for all big block and Hemi engines and part #P4007040 for the small block engines. They pump 80 gph @ 8.7 psi and work well on the street and the drag strip. They aren't cheap at around $180.00 a pop, but they are a very high quality part and their service life has been very good for me. The one in my big block powered 66 Coronet has been in place since the mid 90's and the one I put in my sons small block powered 72 Dart Swinger has been in place since 2005.

As far as the fuel line size goes, I run 3/8" sending units and fuel lines on all of my big block powered cars. Unless your running some serious horse power, 3/8" lines are good to go. Chrysler must have felt that way also, because that's what they used on the Heim and other high performance cars.Just my .02.
