Getting ready to tear in to my car, wanted opinion on attempting to save the tank (been sitting atleast 6 years, so I am sure the fuel is orange sludge), vs. just purchasing a new tank/sending unit. best deal on a new tank I can find is approx. 275 (with the coating to help prevent rust), and 150 for the 1/2" sending unit.

i would keep an eye on what comes out when you dump it. i like to dump into a white bucket so stuff shows up better. if it is just of colored gas with very little sediment give it a good cleaning and carry on. i take mine to a local rad guy and he flushes it clean, 20-25.00 and reinstall. he also has a lining method he can do the tank with but i haven't done that yet, old school me. i had him just recently line a tank of a 1953 royal enfield bike that i am playing with to try it. good luck

If it's not to the point of being pitted, you can save it and reuse it.

Just askin, what are you doing that you need 1/2" sewer line for fuel supply?

My 69 RR sat for 12 years. So long that the fuel line in the tank had plugged with evap fuel residue. I Put a 3/8 pick up in it. Thats the 440/hemi pickup sending unit. Cost 75 bucks new. A new sock, and siphoned and poured out the old gas. Now I run a filter before and after the fuel pump been running fine ever since. Thats my experience. Best of luck.

I helped a buddy clean out a tank that probably should have been scrapped but it came out fine. The trick to loosening any crud is to toss a chain in it with some good strong soap and do the shake and bake. Also, if you got a lot of crap in there you should put a big fuel filter on the supply side of the line and keep it on there for several tank fulls. Chances are the filter will plug up on you so keep tools and a spare with you and have it easy to get to.
