I wanted to see what u guys think of this combo for my little 318 in my 74 charger. Stock bottom end, lunati 60402 cam ( 220/226 @.050 .475/.495 lift), pro comp heads out of the box, 2.020 intake 1.600 exhaust valves, thin head gasket .025 thickness, edelbrock performer rpm intake, holley 600 cfm carb, about 8.5:1 cr. 904 trans, stock convertor, 3.91 gears I figure it will go to about 6000rpm redline. The cam is 112 lsa and 1400-5800rpm range with the intake calve closing 38 degrees abdc to help the low compression. Ssssoooo what do u think? Thanks

It ought to run like a factory 340. Maybe even a little better. I'm sure you will feel you got your money's worth.

i'll be the pessimist here. very small engine, 4000-4200 pound car, low compression, automatic.

I don't think it is 4000lbs my uncles 73 road runner bb440 727 83/4 on the scale was 3900. I think maybe 3600 with the aluminum parts and 904 8 1/4

I know what u mean about stock convertor that's why I went with cam in the 1400 rpm start range so 2000 stall should be good and 3.91 gears to help..........naa sayer hahahahahaha

I beileve this to be over optimistic.

The first problem is the year of the 318. You have a ratio lower than 8-1.
(Unless you measured everything up and did the math. Is this what the ratio is now with the Pro Comp heads?)
The second thing is the stock converter. Up the ante. 2000/2200 stall.
Add a shift kit.
The car may be listed at 3600lbs. BUT! By the time you get in and add fuel, your at 4K lbs. with a full tank of gas.

The rest looks OK.

With modern parts and a good tune these 318s can get to the factory 340/383 hp numbers and those were definitely fun cars.

I like it.

That car will be heavy. Easy 3900+ w/driver. Heck my F-body small block weighs 3700 w/o driver. For that it needs compression and cubic inch. But don't bother buying 318 pistons. I would save up $ and build a cast crank 360 4" stroke short block. Then transfer all your parts. Fortunately your using the 904. Even the stock converter is looser than a 727. Find the low gear set for the trans. They're factory parts and not hard to find. 2.75 vs 2.45 low gear. 9.58 starting ratio vs 10.75 gives you 12% more torque at the hit. Put the cam in at 108 intake centerline and see how it goes. I would also recommend running a Thermoquad. They're cheap used and will help the bottom end.

Ya the cr is like 8.5 with the 64cc chamber and .025 head gasket.....ya I didn't want to change pistons in it because I have a 360 std bore block that I'm gonna do a 408 kit with and transfer some of the parts this is just to have fun with while getting parts and stuff for the 408. I am getting a cope racing street manual valve body for it so won't need the shift kit.

Small primary TQ at that. The primary size is 1.38 vs the 1.50. The smaller primaries will help throttle response with a higher velocity and fuel atomization.
That is IF you go with a TQ though you already have the Holley right?

my 69 coronet r/t is 3900lbs empty, 4060 with me in it. that charger will go 4000lbs with a driver.

Ya I figured the 600 vac secondary would be good didn't want to over carb, I also have a 750 hp holley think that is to much. What do u think about putting a 4 hole 1" spacer in I have one that also can be changed to a open spacer with different insert.

I may have a extra T-Q if you want it it. We ran a stock 318 short block in a Dart for a few years. Stock 360 intake, heads, T-Q, 484 Mopar cam (to big). 4.10 gear to cover the cam. Stock street tires, 2 1/2" exh with cheap headers,727 stock converter. 14.0@101 around 3400lbs with driver as I remember.

U guys think the holley 600 would be to much I see a lot of 318 builds that use 650 dp and 750 vac sec. They are usually higher cr and bored, that's why I figured 600 would be perfect

600 Holley will work. But the T-Q will have better response and better top end.

Do any of you have experience with spacers? Do you think a 4 hole or open 1" would help in any way?

It may or may not. It will depend on what the engine likes.
