The fuel gauge in my '66 Plymouth Satellite reads "empty" all the time. The ground wire is good, I replaced it. I also disconnected the wire and watched the gauge, no difference. I had a mechanic tell me that it is probably the wire going from the tank to the gauge. Does anyone have any solution? I really don't want to take the sending unit out if I don't need to. Thanks for any info. Richard :icon_thumright:

fuel sender test....

With the ign switch on and a test light connected to the sender wire you should get a on-off pulse at the light.
Does your temp guage work...? It takes it's signal downstream from the fuel guage on the circuit board. Perhaps a faulty voltage drop regulator or damaged board.

The temp gauge does work, it's just the fuel gauge that won't do anything. It just sets on empty all the time.

Do I have to pull the dash out to check the circuit board? Thanks

Gota pull the dash to check the circuit boards...I,m having the same problem with my gtx...I,m gonna have to pull the interior to check the wire...Should have 4 ohms at the sending unit.Until then I carry a gallon of gas in the trunk!!

Me too. I'll get to it this winter. It's on the list.

Connect an ohm meter lead to the fuel gauge wire and the other to ground (with the vehicle off. If you get a reading somewhere between 75 (empty) and 10 (full) then most likely your tank sending unit is still OK. Anything way outside that range and there is a good chance the sending unit gave it up.

If you are running an aftermarket fuel gauge you can burn up the sending unit by sending it 12V instead of the factory 5V as well.

ground the sending wire to the frame with the ignition key on and see if it goes to full at the gas tank. also do you have a ground strap from the sender to the fuel line hosebarb..
