gas tank color

[67 GTX]

Does anyone know what color, from the factory, the gas tank was on a 67 GTX? Was it just natural or was it sprayed black? Please be specific with paint types.

Natural, as in clear zinc or cad plated (silver color) and not that hot galvanized stuff.

If the car does have undercoating from the factory the undercoating was not directly sprayed on the tank, it merely had some overspray coating on it.

I just removed my tank today. My 66 Coronet the entire bottom of tank including strap was undercoated. My guess was the dealer did it. Even the filler tube was covered with the stuff.


As a side note. Does anybody know where I can get the single J style strap hook?

so if I leave if natural, wouldnt it be a good idea to just plain clear coat it to protect it?

Will be using Eastwood tank tone to paint my new replacement tank tmmw. Dont know if its "correct" enough for the ultra-purists but looks better than fresh rust to me.

If you have no plating on it then yes, you should put something so it doesn't rust. POR 15 supposedly has some good clear paint. Glisten PC I think?

I think r/t specialties has the hook. I would just spray bomb some undercoating on it and call it good.

regarding the "J strap hooks"...a newer version is (are) available on eBay. I bought some. The original style with a larger opening looked more like a question mark (?), are very hard to find, at least they have been for me. Good luck

Will the clear coat need a primer below it, or is it safe to just spray over a cleaned tank?
