Does anyone have issues with gas leaking out the vent at the front of the tank when its full, I have a 68 RR and if I fill the tank and park it puddles. The vents are done according to the shop manual and complete, any ideas would be appriciated.

My Coronet leaks from the gas cap if I fill it. I have a thread about mine leaking and I think the hot weather expands the gas and the fumes and causes my gauge to read incorrectly. Mine does not do it every time and I had the vent tubes checked and they were not blocked. All I do is fill it mostly full before I go for a ride and by the time I come back home it is not as full. Do you have problems with your gas tank reading also? Mine will say I am on empty, but I really have about half a tank.

Yep. Mine pushes fuel out of the vent after I fill it and park it. I've looked for a "vented" cap from time to time, thinking if I give it more places to vent, it won't push gas out the vent pipe.
In the mean time, I just loosen the cap when I park it with a full/semi-full tank.
Just need to remember to tighten it before driving.

Gas Tank

The gauge is ok, if yours is not accurate pull the pickup and bend the float one way or the other, if you can be pretty sure you have half a tank use that as a guide because if you pull the pickup with too much gas you will have a mess of gas pouring out. I to have got to the point where I dont fill it up and park but it seems like I should be able to if I wanted, Im wondering if this was a common problem with the vents not being able to handle the expansion.
Thanks for the relpy

Had the same vent problem with my 68 GTX and could here the tank expanding and making noises..

It's supposed to vent that's what the vents are for if the fuel gets hot and expands and has no where to go look out lol. Don't forget today's gas is a different mix.

How big are the puddles? more than a 1" x 1" ? more like a spot? if more than that then you may have a legit leak that needs to be addressed.

Funny thing is that the gauge will read correctly (empty) and I can fill it 10 gallons while it is cool outside. During the summer or on hotter days there is a pressure build up and the gauge reads incorrectly and I can only put about 6 gallons in when it reads empty. It is a fun game to play. Am I really on empty?

i had a new tank and had this same problem. looked inside tank and found that there is a vent line to runs almost to the filler neck. that had come loose to where it was mounted to the top of tank. took some fuel line and stuck it on the vent tube and ran it up to just under the fill cap. no more fuel pushed out the vent.

Going to re has this thread since it's summer time and we are sure to get more posts about fuel smell gas puddles etc lol Took a pic of the view from inside my tank, the vent lines at the back had tried switching them in winter but don't think it matters as it is getting warmer here and still have smell. Not as much on the ground though. I am going to try a couple of things 1 put a fuel filter on the end of the short tube see if that helps. 2 maybe find a factory charcoal canister for a ECS Cal car or 70 model. 3 try a vented cap on top of the vent lines in the correct position.

I currently have the lines reverse from the diagram so when parked facing down on a decline gas doesn't pour out the shot vent tube like it has before. that is just weird anyway. Why would it be designed like that? wondering if a filter will help the short one? maybe with smell at least.
