I'm in need of a '79 gas tank for my Magnum.
Is it possible to make an earlier year fit in?
Anybody know of one for sale?

Thanks guys.

rear section trunk.jpgPulled the tank off my 78 Magnum last month. In general it need replacement. Because the later b-bodies have the hump or bump only with a vent system these new tanks are more expensive but still available. Typically $350-400. My 74 charger has a similar design, but I purchased a new tank for the charger with the intent to mount it to thr magnum for comparison. The neck size is smaller in width and length. So that maybe a minor issue. Ive read reports in the forum that a 75/76 Plymouth works just fine. Also that Rock Auto has the best prices. If you plan on dual exhaust system. the tank is narrower but the fill point is the same. In other words it fits the magnum. If you run a search using forum search options you will find part numbers and a lot of helpful comments. Also the gasket and sending units are available. Just make sure to sent the sending unit drop first before installing tank in your magnum. Let me know how it works, I'm not ready to install the tank just yet. Planning to paint the underside, trunk, interior and engine bay black. Thereafter the body will be black.

Rock Auto for a new tank? I just tried that site without luck. BRB, I'm gonna try again.

My '79 has a 360 with dual exhaust to the bumpers. So the narrow tank is what I would like to get. 20/21 gallons is good for me. I do not need/want the extra 2/3 gallon calcify of the larger tank.

Nope, can't find it on the site.

Rockauto lists a gas tank for a 1976 Cordoba with dual exhaust. They list the dimensions, you can check if that is the size you need. It is very odd that they don't list it under the magnum!!! You might try searching under the "Spectra #" they give, it might show up somewhere else on line for your car? Good Luck!

The difference in the gas tanks I think is the hump and some other things I can't recall at the moment.

The hump is an issue. I don't want to "Fix" the hump with my BFH. (Big Freakin Hammer) I did find a spectra tank and another one, name escapes me T this moment, over at JC Whitney for under $80. I'm sure shipping will be a joy!

Unless it is the same as a '79 Magnum, which is not listed, then the hump is probably the issue.

I believe 74-79 all have the hump. The 75 and newer ones lack a vent tube or a rollover valve I think.

My 78 magnum 74 charger, and 75 Cordoba both have the same hump in the trunk. Keep in mind, the b body was basically the same for all models after 74, only the skin was changed changed. in some models the trunk, fender are fits differ cars. magnum fender and trunk will fit the Cordoba.

This is the tank you will need. It will fit. Clean up the tanks straps and paint. Install a new or tested sending unit and gasket. Install a new grommet. Clean and paint the filler hose and bracket. The body metal above the tank may need some attention, now is a good time to address it. I put some rubber pads between any contact points between the tank and the body to eliminate any noises.

Sorry this took so super long. I THOUGHT I had a forum member helping me out with a fuel tank, but it turned into pulling teeth. So he's keeping the tank with the car that is being parted out.

GENTS! Thanks! But the 1979 gas tank is a one year only gas tank WITHOUT the HUMP. Going back to the search bar with coffee and aspirin, tylenol, motrin,.....

They show the same picture as the other tanks. I'm not to keen on dealing with these guys since returns are harder than getting the gas tank from the forum member.

Wonder if you could use a tank from a 73 Charger application. According to Rockauto, the 73 and 74 Charger tanks are different. The 74 tank has the hump and the 73 doesn't. The capacities of both tanks are 20 gallons according to specs. I guess if you wanted to use your 79 tank you could tank it to a radiator shop to have them restore/clean as needed. Just curious if knows if the 73-74 B-Body sending unit will work in the 79 tanks? Thank you in advance.

I completely misunderstood! Have you checked out the dimensions of 72-73 Chargers/Satellites? They don't have the hump and I think some people on this forum mentioned that they were using these older tanks because they are so much cheaper and they were (about) the same size. Pic's and dimensions are on rockauto. Good Luck!!

I think, if memory serves, the 73's didn't have the hump. Now, try Murray Park, www.cbodies.com , he may have one. Be aware, they can sometimes be slow to respond, but they will.
