any thoughts on how I can get my 6x9 speakers to fit in the rear speaker area? One is too small and the other my speaker sits too high in. Anyone mount theirs from the bottom? Does that create distortion?

We did plenty 'o Jensen 6x9' s, you mount them inside the trunk compartment under the package shelf. On top, in the interior, use either the perforated cardboard or cutout the grille openings.

Does that create any distortion with the speakers?

I used wooden spacers about an inch thick and mounted them from the bottom, have not noticed any distortion.

Only 1 speaker hole in the rear tray. The other hole was for optional rear defrost. Thats why the balance was front to rear with no side to side unless it has the deluxe option.

driver side is 5x8. Any comercial aftermarket 5x8 will fit on opening BUT MAYBE screws provisions won't match ( BTDT ). I found a NOS Mopar speaker for it. Just to let you know, truck front speakers are the same. I meant because if you wanna try a NOS one, won't search for B/E bodies unless you wanna deal with the price. Lo off ppl don't know front truck one is THE SAME EVEN WITH PN. I paid $20 for it, and those who had it listed for B/E bodies, asked $60 or more.

passenger side is 6x9. These set as any regular setup, old and aftermarket speakers

passenger side was used for speaker when optioned, what it means NO REAR DEFFOG was optioned.

Rear deffog and dual rear speakers were optioned together just on C and E bodies with the adaptor. This adaptor doesn't fit correctly on B bodies due the deck lid torsion bars and package/deck filler lenght. Is shorter. ( BTDT )

both must be fit in fact from bottom, never from top. The speaker basket won't allow to fit it from top.

I used C nuts on tray and speed screws to attach it from trunk area

Could it be fit a 6x9 into the 5x8 opening ? yes but better with somehow of adaptor/spacer as mentioned, because the speaker cone suspension can meet the sheetmetal and won't allow the full excursion of the cone. Of course this could affect the speaker tone due the "inverted horn" shape the opening will get. If you are not "picky" with sound quality and tone change, go for it.

Did these all the time.Pull the seat and the cardboard. If you didn't have the oval opening in the metal shelf, we scribed a template and cut it. Mount the speakers underneath. Use either a factory board with perforated holes on top, or cut out the grille opening. ( I got my distortion from blasting Master of Reality.)

Did a sound upgrade to my 73 rr recently. As stated, driver side opening is not for a 6x9 and you will have to sacrifice some sheet metal to get a correct fit for a 6x9. The passenger side opening will work out ok. Installed my speakers from underneath (trunk access) and used spacers to get them sitting low enough in the openings for there not to be interference from the parcel shelf. Spacers of various thickness are available from places like Amazon and ebay. I placed two Pioneer 3-ways in the rear and two of the 3.5 inch Pioneers into the front speaker hole by utilizing an adapter plate, that gave 4 channels. Speakers are all out of sight, so it gives the look of being "original-ish." I sent off the AM/FM radio to have a modern conversion done to its internals, so it puts out some wattage and sounds pretty good now.

Could u get the front speakers installed with the dash in?

I was fortunate, I guess. My package tray had been ransacked by a previous owner hack job at some point. I removed top piece, cleaned up all the metal and build speaker pods on top and then reinserted the board. If you come from underneath, as long as your speakers are tightly installed and not rattling against anything else, you should not have any distortion. Stereos are always fun! Not!

I'll post a pic in a few for an idea.. Lots of work but worth it. Should look and sound good.

Heres a pic. Work left to go when this was taken..

Well I very much doubt it. I had the dash completely removed when I installed the adapter plate with the speakers in it. Think you could drop the steering column and remove the bolts/screws at the top of the dash then rotate it back enough to do the install. That way the dash doesn’t have to be completely removed but you still have enough room to drop the speakers in from the top. Here is a pic from when I removed my dash, it has two bolts at the bottom and you can pivot it on those bolts.

yes it can be installed. The front speaker fits from top on 3rd gens not from bottom. Is an unique speaker basket frame, not the same as earliers. just need to remove the top grill frame and voila.

3 phillips screws in front of dash pad, and 4 1/4" hex heads at sides of the windshield vents. That will expose the speaker with windshield in place and dash frame installed ( this grill needs to be removed anyway to drop the dash frame thought ! ). Once this grill is removed you'll have access to the speaker. Dash frame serves the bed for the speaker.

becarefull not to drop the windshield vent screws through the vents... will be hard to get them back ( if even posible ). If you can fill the socket with some grease to capture the screws, better. Or even mask the vents itself
