Did anybody put in a new front windshield or back glass in or should I trust local glass place to do this. I am not sure if these new modern places knows how to install these in classic cars. Your input please. Thanks.
I put my own back glass in, you can get a kit at the auto parts store and it will have your rope seal and spacers to put the back one in. I got a guy to come to the shop to put the winshield in and there was several places I could have took it but I din't want to trailer it. Just check around and you can find some one to do it. Good Luck Ronnie
Call around and find a shop that's comfortable working with the older cars. Some shops would rather not be bothered and you'd rather not use them as a result. Best money you'll ever spend, plus you can get them to put the trim back on without mangling it all up.
The rear glass should be urethaned in and the rope seal stuff is not what you want to use. A good friend of mine works for Safelite auto glass and has personally seen people that had him come put in a glass that he had used that stuff on (blew out going down the road!) add to the fact that the urethane seals better (keeps the water out!) the front glass you can install, make sure you lay the rubber out in the sun to get it pliable and then use a water bottle with some soapy water to help it in then it just has a lockstrip that folds in on itself.
First place I called was Safelite, and I asked if they could come out, yank the glass, and come back later when the car was ready. Their reply was "shop policy is you need to bring the car in to our shop". LOL, the car wasn't running and I sure as heck wasn't going to trailer it there and back for just that. Ended up finding a shop where they came out to my house to do it. I called around to the local shops looking for a place that had an old geezer that's done older cars before when I was looking.
Hmmm, my buddy that works for Safelite they don't have a shop they do it at your place? Sounds like you had a lazy Safelite installers. They stay pretty busy around here I think he does around 8 windshields a day! 3 installers for the southwest reigon of Indiana.
