Glove Box Door Lock Woes

So I am trying to separate my glove box door into pieces so I can paint the inside piece of metal.

I can't seem to get the lock off. I checked the FSM, and then the archives. The archives are very helpful, including a post from 6pktgo (post #10) that includes directions for how to get if off (THANKS!)

The problem I have is that I do not have the proper key so I can lock the glove box door. Without being able to put it in the lock position, I can't get to the tumblers, and the lock assembly won't come off.

I appreciate any suggestions the forum may have to get this off. Do I have to take the whole assembly to a locksmith? If so, should he or she be able to get it off even though it is still attached? This is frustrating as it is holding me up painting this part!!!

As a last resort, I've been able to pry the knob off. Drawback is breaking the outer plastic door, but most of the times it was being replaced. The knob can be pressed back on. But beware & do so, if you would, at your own risk. But... if you're only painting the inside, why not just mask it off ?

In my case, my outer plastic door is in nice shape and will be reused. Yes, I am only painting the inside, so I guess I could mask it off. It will be more of a hassle to paint around the glove box latch, but at this point, that might be less hassle than getting it off!

If you remove the door you can take it to a locksmith and have them pick the lock. It should be very simple for them and pretty cheap. You may also be able to get the tumblers reset and/or a key made so in the future the lock actually works.

In that case, I'd just carefully tape off the latch as well as mask the primeter, of course.

So I took the whole glove box door to a locksmith today. I also had to have my door keys rekeyed since I bought new door locks as well. I taped up the plastic door with blue painter's tape to protect the plastic outer door. Hopefully it will all turn out OK.

Just an update on this: The locksmith expertly handled the glove box lock, rekeyed it to my trunk key, and gave it back to me apart so I can paint my inner metal frame.

Nice, and not too expensive!

Now back to my favorite task - painting...
