Good Source for re-chroming bumpers.

Does anyone have a good source for re-chroming bumpers? I have a 1971 GTX and I am looking to have the front bumper done. I checked Google and found a place in Tennessee. When I contacted them, they quoted me $900.00 for the front bumper. Doesn't make sense, when I can buy a new one from Year One for $429.00 and I have also seen them for $329.00

Tri City Plating in Tennessee is the best that I know of. Government regulations have all chrome shops under the gun in the US. I hope that China bumper fits, yes it's cheaper, but there is nothing like an original bumper, triple chrome show plated. You get what you pay for.

Life time warranty to. I have had over 40 bumpers done there and only one problem, that was corrected for free.

Agree on Tri-City. They did my bumpers 10 years ago and they still look great.

The new bumpers are thinner metal, cheap chrome and often wavy and imperfect. They are OK for a driver level car, but if you want really nice, IMHO you need to rechrome originals by a quality outfit.

The amount of labor involved added to the regulatory overhead for a chrome plating operation is just short of staggering. Yours is of the vintage that sits up high on the front of the car and any flaws will be readily apparent. The times I've tried to cheap out on a bumper have consistently left me wishing I'd spent more up front. Tough decision I know, but spend the money and you'll be happier in the long run I believe.

I reached out to Ogden Chrome a few months ago to re-chrome my front bumper...$1400.00 and 6-8 month turn around. They do an awesome job but man they're not cheap

I dropped mine off at TriCity a couple years ago and they had them about 2 months. One came back with scuffs from packaging and shipping. I called and they redid it for no charge. Came back perfect. They have not been installed yet on my 70 Superbee but they are now flawless! I even needed some metalwork done because even though they hadn't rusted thru anywhere, they did have dings and that drive up the cost a little. I would recommend them hands down!! I'll be sending my 71 Demon bumpers up when I get to that car. TriCity has survived all these years for a reason!

I used D&R Chrome for the bumpers on my '73 RR. Dropped them off at a car show, picked them up several months later at another car show so shipping wasn't involved. Beautiful chrome and the best price I could find. 1-855-324-7663

Personally, comparing aftermarket bumper to rechromed oem is apples and oranges.

I had Ogden rechrome do a 67 gtx bumper back in 2010. It was ugly: bent, twisted and rusty. -$350 with shipping both ways . I’d hoped I’d get at least driver quality , it came back absolutely perfect. I was stunned. A few years later I was quoted $800 for my bee rear bumper with a minor dent and no rust at all. Apparently new owners knew what actual cost to run the business was.

I wound up going to Escondido Chrome Plating in San Diego area in 2017. He did an awesome job on my Bee rear bumper, still around $350 back then. Family owned business for 50+ years , grandfathered into old EPA standards, so operating costs much lower, until commiefornia pulls his exemption.

Of course shipping to Southern Commiefornia from TN will drive cost up significantly. I’d say save up and bite the bullet. Just pick a top notch shop nearby and you won’t regret rechroming.
