So I scored a set of bare TF240s for a screaming deal - just wondering if I should look at anything specifically quality control wise -

I plan on dropping them off at my machinist to be double checked but I like having an idea - if anyone has negative experience with the TF heads.

I'll be giving it stainless valves and whatever springs my cam calls for -

anyone want to educate me on retainers and keepers? what's better between 7* or 10* ? I've never really done too much head head work but these look really damn good to me.

Also - utilizing a roller cam vs a flat tappet - I know usually requires different valve springs - but are the valves a factor as well ?

They are junk...I'll give you $20 for the scrap aluminum...:D

I would first contact Trick Flow and see if they can help you out with all of it.

If cam lift is going to be above 0.525" to 0.550", go with the 10 degree. If it will be below 0.525", 7 degree will be fine. For the 7 degree locks, stamped would be the least desirable, heat treated stamped would be better, and machined would be the best choice. Most aftermarket retainers will start off as a chrome moly steel piece which is good. You get over the 0.550" lift number, too steel retainers might work better for you. Unless you are racing or stupid high lifts, titanium will not be necessary. Most cam manufacturers will recommend the proper components to match the cam you are selecting.

When I had the springs changed on my iron 452 heads that were already on the 440 6bbl in my Roadrunner, I went with CompCams springs and hydraulic flat tappet lifters. Mancini provided new stock length pushrods.
Basically, I had a lifter collapse, and come back. The next time I had one collapse, it didn't "come back". I had suspected the springs were weak, and my local builder confirmed that.
Anyway, I got the 10° locks, and new retainers from CompCams while I was at it. My impression is that 10° locks "bite" better than 7°
Ever since then, my engine demands I let it spin up to 6,200 RPMs. I have to credit the Purple Stripe 292°/.509 cam for the rush of power, and the 6bbl setup too.
I can't wait to try my Weiand intake, but I really need some Trick Flow heads!
To the OP, check valve stem bushings. I've read more than one report that they were "a little tight".
