GT vs F1 speed

Cubic dollars & ubber-technology

Most people don't have any idea how much skill it takes to drive an F-1 car successfully. To say that these cars are ultra fast and extremely twitchy is almost an understatement. Very few people have the talent.

They are ridiculously stupid as far as performance. I read a while ago, these cars can do 0-100mph and back to 0 in like 3.5 seconds. I f you were to drive one down a straight, and lift off the throttle before a corner. Just lifting off the throttle is like slamming on the brakes in any other race car.

I've been to Nascar races, I've been to Sportscar races, I've been to Indy races and I've been to Formula 1 races. Honestly, until you see a Formula 1 car live, you have no clue!

Agree, saw them at Detroit Grand Prix many years ago up close, it's like top fuel cars, you see them on tv then sit at a track and watch and it's almost scary how fast they are. Some things must be seen live to really appreciate.

That is Eau Rouge at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. F1 cars take it flat out, and the compression during the uphill transition can be seen/heard in the lowering of engine rpm due to the extra load.

F1 drivers are by far the fittest motorsport drivers. Jeff Gordon had the opportunity to drive one and commented he'd have to train significantly to dream of driving one regularly. Reporters asked if he meant seat time, and he pointed out one of the F1 drivers and how thick his neck was. Not only strength and conditioning, teams are pushing for them to lose more and more weight - allows engineers more freedom to put the weight where they want it.

There are estimates that the cars could run high 8's in race form. Imagine that acceleration coupled w/ 4g lateral and 5g on decel - for numerous corners and 50+ laps. That's why mid 30s is old in the sport.

Watched the race from Bahrain yesterday, Brian Johnson from AC/DC did the podium interviews and did a great job, I think.

Exactly. Most people watching on TV don't realize the elevation change at Eau Rouge is around 150' vertical. Imagine, going full speed through Eau Rouge, then hitting the Kemmel straight at full speed.

Gilles Villeneuve vs Rene Arnoux 1979 French Grand Prix. I remember watching that race, and that's what I was reminded of watching Lewis & Nico!!

I'll have to look that one up. I'm normally a bit bored w/ Bahrain, but when the safety car came out and the Lewis and Nico show began I was VERY entertained.

I've been trying to turn people on to it in the States. If a person likes engineering, racing, and cars...it doesn't get better.

Only prob is there's no good coverage here. Very sad. Sky Sports from the UK has really good pre-shows w/ driver/team interviews and tech/rule coverage as well as post-race analysis though...

How do you get sky? I can't get it.

I'd love to get all the pre & post race goodies.

I'm in the same boat. Here in Canada I get TSN starting 5 minutes before the race and stopping right after the podium.

That is one fast Civic. That is a Civic right? lol

I used to be very big into Supercross and all the motorcycle races really. But it was really hard to follow because of coverage. Speed eventually caught up but unless it was a really big race it wasn't shown live.
I would love to follow F1 but like you said coverage in the states is poor. It's the same with hockey. I never get to watch Sharks games. Yet poker has a primetime ESPN slot.
