Ive got a 741 center section in my 8.75 and am reading that it was only used for light horsepower A body cars. My '71 GTX is no feather weight and puts out nearly 400hp. Should I be baby'ing this car around and start shopping for a 742 or 489?

Also, I know it has a suregrip with 3:55 gears, I guess that stuff will swap over?

Thanks :)

You should be ok running an automatic and not so sticky tires. I ran a 741 cased 3.91 in my 69 Bee and was putting about 375 to the ground. Never had a problem.

And no, the only think that will swap from case to case is the sure grip unit. (maybe the yoke depending on the pinion gear) but that's all

A buddy used to race a 67 Formula S 383 Barracuda with slicks and N2O with a 741 3.91 Sure Grip and nothing puked out the back. And he hit the nitrous off the line! Like above post says, the tires are your fuse.

OK thanks guys, makes me feel a lot better.

741's are just fine as long as your not leaving on a trans brake.. I use to race my 66' Satellite on slicks with a 3:91 w/741, No Problems!!!

just not as many gear choices for the 741,perfectly fine for a street car
