Rebuilding a 383 for my Satellite using 906 heads. I cc checked the heads and found one side with 86cc chambers and one with 87cc. I want to order domed pistons to increase my compression ratio. I would like the heads to match cc.

Do I need to have the larger cc head shaved or can I offset the smaller using a thicker head gasket?

Thanks for any help

Just use a die grinder on the 86cc chambers and make them match the 87cc...Thats what we did to mine at the machine shop. But you should also consider that 87cc head might have had a valve angle job done at some point, that would sink the valves into the head creating higher cc's...You could measure the height of the valve stems on each head and if the valve stems are higher on the 87cc head chances are it's been worked on....One other point, look into pistons with an adjustable quench area..domed pistons are inefficient, you don't get a good burn with them.Check out the link below:pick a piston then enter your 87cc's into the box on the new page on the left and it will tell you your compression ratio.

Valid points, but the link you have listed is for 440 pistons, not 383's like he needs. But unless this is gonna be some serious kind of motor.....in which case you're gonna probably not want an 86-87 chamber, then I wouldn't worry. If you haven't had the heads checked to make sure they're FLAT, then do so. They can be equalized then

The heads were already redone. I was checcking them to select pistons. This is not gonna be a race engine, i want a stronger than stock but reliable engine. With the heads I have, any suggestions on a piston to put me around 9.5:1 compression?

Thanks for any help. Rob
