Ijust purchased a headliner from legendary with the padding. I have never installed a headliner before is there anything speacial I need to do? This is going in a 68 Superbee.
Hello. Use two people, use a hair dryer to soften it up while applying but don't get it to hot ( its tricky ). I installed my headliner myself in my 68 gtx and would call myself a perfectionist. I have taken apart and put back together every bolt on my car ( a 9 yr project) This by far was the toughest job I had to do and make it look nice. It still has creases in it because when you pull one way it looks great ( then it relaxes and creases the other direction ). I got 15 hrs into mine and it looks just o.k. The good- nobody scratched your car by crawling around in it ( that's why I did it myself ). the bad- it may not look perfect but only cost $80 from legendary. I started from the front to back. There is instructions how to in a mopar muscle magazine. check the web on that. Good luck.
After reading there instructions I did not know there was glue involved. I thought that the little spikes I will call them on the edges heald it in place. I am going to have to go though everything I have to see if I have the trim that is needed. Does anyone have some pictures of theres I can see? 68 bee is what I have.
Just remember, whenyou think you've stretched it enough and its going to tear, your just starting to get there according to the shop that redid my seats, kinda wish I knew that when I did my headliner.
It gets glued all along the sides with metal clips that hold it in place ( I used clothes pins to hold them there temporary ). Also near the sail panels it gets glued. They might not of mentioned the glue in the article.
This sounds like it is getting to be very complicated. Is this something that can be done by someone that has never did this before. Heck I dont even know what goes on over the headliner around the edges now that I have looked at everything. I did not take this apart so I am just guessing at this point. I want it to look good and think I am handy but.........
did mine took forever but the good side is i did it myself--high as hell quotes -take your time and it will turn out allright-don't be afrid to trim some off the ends and cut the bow's shorter than normal see what happens-not a rocket scientist type of job--the glue is for the padding
no462of12K is right You can do this. Do you have your bows marked. I marked my bows when I took my headliner apart ( hopefully whoever disassembled did ). Find the clips on the side were the bows went. It is not a easy job but I did mine all myself that means if you get a second person it should be easier. It takes a lot of patience(re-member I am the guy who spent 15 hrs on his ) and do a little bit at a time. You will have to pull in all directions at times. Remember your bows go through the liner on the back of the headliner and the directions say you may have to cut those loops back to get at the end of the bows. I used wooden clothes pins after i glued the side to hold them there till the glue dries but remember i glued a little bit at a time on the sides ( sounds like not everyone glues the sides and uses the clips ). If you glue the sides DONT CUT IT SHORT ON THE SIDES. You can always go back and cut after the glue dries. I will take some pics later of the u- clips in the week for you plus the headliner. Your only out the $80. you spent on it.
I was able to look at things today and I am going to try it. Pictures will be good thanks. Man I am very happy that I found this site. Noticed that I also am missing some chrome trim I think. If someone has pop out rear windows can you send a picture of that area also.
You will start at the front or the rear and stretch it pretty tight until you have wrinkles that go from front to rear. When you pull the sides those wrinkles will go away and it will start to look like you know what you are doing! The cloth sock that the bows fit into will need to be trimmed on the ends and you can probably approximate where to trim by looking at the old head liner. Use pieces of pinch welt to hold the headliner in place as you wrap the material around window openings, etc...
After hanging my new headliner in the car (66 Satellite) and doing a little stretching I realized if I wanted a perfect install I would have to take it to the experts. I took it to Sure Fit Seat covers in Tacoma WA and 2 1/2 hours later it was done for the cost of $200. They did a fantastic job and I highly recommend letting the experts do it.
