We loaded up and pulled the hour south on a damp morning to see what would happen. Seemed to be 150 cars showed up to race and about 1500 to 2000 spectators to watch. Very well organized. They used a concrete runway smooth as a piece of granite and a modified stop light to start. No Tree,No Clock,No Stationary Burnouts,No Traction, finish line was orange cones and I had a blast. Organizers would take 40 cars to a circle at the base of the runway to stage.(Yellow in the middle was pre stage.Red on the top was staged. Instant green at the bottom was go.) The starters would pair you up with what they saw as a good match.(They did well) They would bring you up to the line and allow a dry burnout. Lots of the track cars just started because of transmission damage worries. What a show. Lots of spinning and pedal fests but tons of fun and action. The fans loved it. The street guys loved it and the track guys figured it out by the days end. Like always we talked to a lot of people and found every one pleased at the end of the day. I would recommend this event and I would recommend talking to these guys about their system. They did a super job for a first year event. Dave

I'm liking it! Kind of brings back the old days of racing!

Beaver Springs Pa. would do that at their Rt.30 reunion and use a guy with starter flags. A lot of the racers weren't aware of how a flagger works and we're leaving late. That was fun to watch also.

Thanks for sharing. No pics?

Was this on the east west runway on the hill? I do not know if the north south runway in the bottom has been built.
If they make this an annual event it could become huge quite fast.
If coming in from out of town the airport is large enough to accommodate corporate jets.
Wish I had known about this a week ago. Brother in law is in trouble.

We use to race that way at Chanute AFB when stationed there many years ago. An eventy not public knowledge but still a happening.

I been hearing the buzz on this event at several car shows. I so much wanted to be there , but wife's Mother's funeral was that day. Glad to hear the good turn out, maybe they will do it again next year. I did get my 64 Dodge ( Brutus) to the Rustember fest at Pacific Jct. drag strip last weekend. First time out, and I was pleased with the car, but myself, not so much.........................MO

That sounds like fun and not far away. Give us a heads up next year. Might have to check it out!

The cars were lined up on the taxi way going north. They classed by race car and street car.(lots of very fast street cars) They would take about 40 cars from taxi way to turn around circle behind #30.There they would make up interesting pairs or people could pair themselves. The start was just past the 30. The 1/8th mile finish was 3/5 ths to the taxi way and they had cones before the crossing runway. You finished and shut down then turned around and exited back down the taxi way. It was very confusing at first but because of the layout was the only way to work it. The turnaround donut at the start could hold 40 cars and allowed the crew to match up cars. Airports are really big areas and the grass area here was alfalfa ground that was very rough. Hard to walk on. Spectators were back 150 feet or more. parking was in town and they shuttled spectators to grounds. Lots of walking. No shade. (no trees at airports). I am long winded because this was so much fun. There are tons of small airports struggling to survive financially. If this could work it would be another revenue stream for them and another place to race. This deal in Atlantic Iowa was very well run. Very safe, and a total blast to participate in. Thanks to the Shriners. Dave

Years ago we use to race light to light downtown Atlantic late night - one way traffic. Police station only a block away. Those were the days when it was a go to place on Saturday night.

No. Run what you brung (sic.) line up and race,go around and race again. Strip opened about noon and they let you run til six. Super good time! Dave

I had too many street races to recall. But got into drag racing and got blood going. Over the years raced lots at Cedar Falls, a couple times at Eddyville. Don't think I'd go for any "street racing" deal today. Way too old.

I agree, just not on the street. I do think I can hold my own at the drag strip, just not quite as well 35 years ago!!

VIDEO OF AIRPORT ACTION.

Spin fest. Watch Anglia. They warned about no stationary burnouts. Airport was worried about damage. Still more fun than I've had in a long time with my cloths on !! Dave

Looks like you did ok on that pass.

Reminds me of US30 in York Pa. (Back in the day) Running at the airport, sometimes they had to shut the action down to let a plane land, then resume the racing. They were the days!

Funny but we did have a Citation M2 land on an adjacent runway. Had to shut down while he refueled and used the only taxiway back out. Without heated tires(no stationary burnouts) it was a spin fest. My car will pull the front wheels on a prepped track. This was a spin fest. My car worked best getting into third gear way early (75 feet) and lugging it out. Dave
