I went to O'Reilly's to get plugs to fill the heater core holes in the firewall. They didn't have 1" body plugs so I went to the HELP! section. They had some rubber master cylinder gaskets that looked to be the right size.

They fit perfect and cost $5.99!

Good tip. After taking all of the body plugs out of our '64 with no plans of returning them all I ended up with some leftover 1" oem plugs that worked as well. Damned if I can remember what part of the body they originally came from though.

Good info right there, how hard was it to remove the heater core? I have the whole dash torn apart right now in my car and would like to remove it while I'm in there....since the heater never gets used I'd like to just take it out.

Are you going to drag race your car?

It takes a bit of doing but it's definitely not the hardest heater core to remove. Are you wanting to leave out the whole heater box assy? The heater core resides inside and everything comes out as a unit. All of the bolts are accessible with hand tools. I found on mine that the screws holding the air duct to the kick panel all sheared off for some reason. Since you're ditching the heater core will you also get a heater delete plate? This guy makes them.

I am looking to remove the entire box...this car is only driven in nice (warm) weather so the use of the heater is pretty non-existent. Anything I can do to tidy it up a bit behind the dash would be great...I already have the hoses removed so I'll have to take a look at it a bit further. Thanks for the advice.

Yes, occasionally.

It will never be out when I need a heater/defroster.

I did save all the parts to put one in it if I get tired of having cold feet. (not likely).
