Today I broke my 2:nd mini-starter, low cost, probably Chinese-made. Now I need some heavy duty stuff, and I'm asking for your advice.
My engine is a 512 cui built for ethanol, with 12.4 in static and some 9.2 in dynamic compression. What heavy duty, top quality starter do you think could do the job?

i'v heard lots of folks using starters from 90'S Dodge Dakotas with great success.

A Robmc starter, but those are very pricey.

It is much easier on the starter if you fire the ignition after the starter has started turning.

Yes, that is something to consider. The computer is set to allow for 3 crank crank revolutions before starting computing ignition and injection, but I'm going to double it to 6. Ignition is set to fire at -1 degrees ATDC during cranking, but I'm also going to lower the dwell time to try to minimized the risk of any premature firing.
So Dodge Dakota, Robbmc and Powermaster is what I should look for. Any opinions on CVR?

I have one from a 94 Dakota in my cars, basically is the same starter as all those high priced units out there....you can get one at any corner auto parts store....and with a warranty in case of failure

Thanks for the info, I just ordered a new starter for the Dodge Dakota, will be interesting to see how it works.

I had a Mopar mini starter and it died. Picked up a new Powermaster and although it looks similar, cranking is at a whole new level lol! Night and day difference.

I ordered a brand new Dodge Dakota 90´s starter, which I thought would be a quality starter...
To my disappointment it was exactly the same no-name as those 2 starters I've already broken. The only difference was the 50% price adder at the Mopar/GM dealer.

I'm now looking at 2 Powermaster models:
- The 9523 XS Torque which has a billet, replacable nose cone
- The 9413 Ultra Torque without a nose cone

Do I need a nose cone or shall go for the more powerful Ultra Torque w/o a nose cone?

Comments appreciated.

I have the one with the billet adjuster and 200 ft lb of torque. Quite the animal. 9513 model.
