67 Coronet 500 with Hedman Elite Hedders 78038 - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hed-78038

I have a nasty exhaust leak on my right side on a 1975 OEM style 440; I have been contemplating headers and a new exhaust anyway and was looking for some feedback on the Hedman Elite Hedders.

Any advice on clearance issues I may have with installing these? Specifically with clearance around the power steering and stock starter. Would I need a smaller starter with these?

I chose these mainly because of the thicker flange (3/8”) vs. most others at (5/16”), is there anything out there with a better fit for me? Also, the Summit application says it fits 67 Coronets with power steering.

Anyone running these? Comments/advice welcome.

Thanks,

John in Montana

I'm running Hedman elite headers on my 66 belvedere with a 440. You will need a mini starter. Power steering clearance was a problem. I pulled the steering box off and slotted the two mounting holes at the top (of the steering box). I slotted the holes about a quarter of an inch. I didn’t have to slot the bottom hole. It tilted the steering box away from the header. I could have shimmed the motor mount on the driverside up a little but I'm running a edelbrock rpm intake and didn't have the hood clearance. I used felpro header gaskets and Mr. Gasket hi-temp lock washers. The headers come with header bolts but don't use them. They make longer header bolts that work better and don't cost much. I used 452 heads which is probably the heads you have. There was a casting above the exhaust ports that had to be ground down. You shouldn't have any problems with the pass header. I wasn't very happy with the headers when I first started installing them. That was three years ago and I have not had the first leak and they still look like new.
Make sure you use lock tight on the steering box bolts if you go that route. Also use a sealant on the header bolts.
