Hello everyone - glad to be back in "the driver's seat..."
My 74 Charger that I bought 31yrs ago finally came out of the garage a couple weeks ago, after sitting for 15yrs while the kids grew up.
We chose RV'ing with the kids rather than boring car shows etc.
Camper sold last yr.
Son is graduating this month and he's been peeking under the cover with the kids on the street for a decade, telling them he's gonna drive this to grad someday.
Well good excuse for me to get it out.
We also have a 57 Coronet in decent shape. Looking forward to getting back into the show circuit and meeting people!
The Charger is original and needs some TLC.
Been messing with the stock 2bbl to get the surge / miss out of it.
Starts good cold, not bad warm, but cool down period is a little funky requiring throttle messing around.
Leaves the line ok and steady but the skip starts when backing off at any speed to cruise.
What I've done:
- Dropped gas tank, cleaned thoroughly and blown dry although some red in the cracks (car is rust free non winter driven 67k on it)
- New fuel pump
- Rebuilt carb mainly for accelerator pump and gaskets. Definitely cleared up the accl. pump issue and ran great till fuel filter clogged.
- On 3rd fuel filter. First one lasted 1 hr. Nice and plugged. 2nd one lasted a week. Will change 3rd one tonight.
- New plugs after 1st fuel filter change.
Drivability has progressively worsened even with new fuel filters.
Running rich no matter what adjustments are made.
But not sure about the cruise at speed position on the pedal causing a skip or miss.
Any ideas?
Just want it to run right before I tear the top end off and go 4bbl, cam and aluminum intake (hate to take a completely original car and modify but its time to make it more fun)
