Hi,

Newbie here. I searched out this site 'cause I knew MOPAR folks have GOT to have their support net. Although I do not own a vintage MOPAR, they are the first cars I learned to drive and, frankly, my heart is still with them.

Fast forward to today. A good neighbor is heavily into totally restoring a '69 Charger R/T 440, single 4-barrel, 4 speed car. I have never worked on them and he is asking me how to properly mate the throwout bearing to the clutch fork on his 4 speed. His plan is to mate the tranny to the bell housing and to the engine on the floor and install as a unit (the car's front clip is not installed...just the inner front fenders).

I had not seen a throwout bearing like he showed me (used to small block Chevys).

Can someone point me to the "how to" on this install? Perhaps a visual is available. That would be ideal.

Again, apologize for joining and right away asking for help. This neighbor is not too much of a computer jock. In fact we both have been born too early

Appreciate your response.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jim

i dont have the greatest camera but you can kinda see how it goes in and how the springs hold the fork to the bearing

morbidgoat,

THANK YOU! I appreciate your effort. I know my neighbor certainly does. I certainly was confused when he showed me the throwout bearing with those wire clips on 2 sides. I'm used to seeing the small block Chevy and the right and wrong way of installing those.

Here's a diagram showing that right and wrong of the Chevy and was hoping he could see the right and wrong way (if there is) to this Mopar.

Again, thanks for the pics. This should help him.

Regards,

Jim

Is there a publication available that reprints the factory assembly manual for these cars? I know he has the service manuals but he does not have an assembly manual. Is there one?

Thanks again!

It's a simple thing. Assuming he has a new bearing WITH collar, the collar will have a spring clip on each side. The clutch fork will only go in one way. The throwout bearing will then only go on one way........

unless he decides to point it away from the clutch that is.

69 Runner,

You know, you're right about the simplistic nature of that throwout bearing but believe you me, I learned the hard way on Chevy's, putting that bearing in wrong (tangs of the fork on top of the bearing surface...wears 'em out quick).

Are you aware of the availability of an assembly manual for these Chargers?

Thanks!

Jim

Not that I know of. Best thing would be a service manual.

And while it might be possible to put on in a Chevy incorrectly, I think you'll find you will have to TRY to put on in a Mopar wrong:grin:

(I just put a 70 4 speed runner back together, but I don't have a pic that shows the lever and bearing)
