I have a 2002 Lincoln Blackwood that came from the factory with a power lifted tonneau cover. Lincoln only produced this model for one year. They thought they would sell a ton of them but only sold 3,300 units. The power module that sends signals to the lift motors was a poorly designed unit and failures were frequent and almost guaranteed. The power module replacement is no longer available (anywhere!). I have found an aftermarket module that powers lineal actuators which has been used to convert manual hard tonneau covers to power lifted covers.

Long introduction to a electrical question...

The Blackwood uses two 12 volt motors to lift the cover, they run in forward and reverse (up and down). The motors have, which I believe, is an electro magnet drive mechanism that engages/disengages when power is applied. When there is no power to the motor the magnet is in "neutral" which allows you to manually lift the cover.

Here is the question....the motors run both in forward and reverse but the magnet is not engaging to the motor flywheel...any thoughts on how the power would would be provided to the flywheel? Maybe through the pins to copper rings in the flywheel side similar to the exposed side of the magnet?

I'm hoping to use the aftermarket remote unit to power the motors. I've wired the aftermarket unit to the motors and they will run in forward and reverse but the magnet doesn't engage on either motor. If I don't figure out the motors I can install the lineal actuators but the problem with that is if there is a power failure or a actuator failure I won't be able to open the cover manually (?).

Below are pictures of the motor, the flywheel and magnet and the assembly the motor is attached. Please excuse the muddled txt on the photos.

Did you ever get your blackwood problem figured out? I have one and have the same problem with the tonneau. Also having problems with the air-suspension and the navigation console. Other then the aforementioned, I love this truck.

After HOURS of thinking, trial and error and banging my head I've got the tonneau working. I ended up rewiring the motor/electro clutch and lock system. I used a two switch power window switch and mounted it next to the rear door jam and right rear seat.

I also had issues with the air suspension (leaking fitting) and blew a bag on my way to Carlisle last year. Those bags are expensive so I converted to a coil spring kit that's made for the Blackwood the cost as I recall was about $400.00 for the kit ....but one bag was that much if you can find them. I'm happy with the conversion. No problem here with the navigation console.

I also love the truck it gets a lot of looks and when you raise the tonneau it blows them away.

If you pm me your contact info I'd be happy to explain more in detail the tonneau fix. Its such a joy now having not having to unlock it manually. (Only Blackwood owners know what I'm talking about)

Hey there... Just found this posting. I am having suspension, tonneau and Navi issues also(lol)

Any help getting the old girl fixed is appreciated. I assumed I could stuff f150 springs under her. Wrong. And I cannot find any current conversions available. Not sure I'm capable of diagnosing the whole suspension thing, but I do see bags available online for about 110 ea and a pump reman for 140 , but would still prefer to steel spring her as I don't understand the relays, sensors Etc involved. Also, driving around w the tonneau unlatch rd doesn't thrill me. Any and all help n successions are appreciated. Thanks
Chris.

I have a 2002 Blackwood and have this problem with the tonneau cover. Any way you could possibly send me the info on how you got yours to working? Been steadily working on this with no luck. Any info would be most greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I bypassed the failed control module and "hard wired" the lift motors and used a power window switch for operation. I'd be happy to share with anyone how I did it. Paceman I'll PM you with my email address.

Please send me the information also.

I'm having the same issue with my tonneau cover. Could you also send me the info on how to retire it. Also how did you get the latch to unlock from the switch?

We had a 2002 Blackwood in the dealership, after hours of diagnosing we figured out that it was the Tanneou cover module, completely unavailable from Ford. Basically the dealer told us we were out of luck. After a few weeks of searching I found a Module Repair company in Moscow Idaho that was able to fix the old module for $250. Module Masters in Idaho, ask for Chad if you have this issue. Hope this helps anybody else that is stuck with the same issue!
