Doing a ground up '66 charger. I am almost 100% stripped down to the bone, but cant seem to sort out how to remove the side glass from the doors and from the rear side panels. The rear ones are really giving me fits. How do you safely pop the glass out of the bottom trough? I tried to pry it, but its tight and I fear it will shatter. The parts in there holding up the door are also still partially stuck in there. I almost wish I never started removing them, but they will need restoring anyway due to cranking problems.

Second, I am even more afraid of how this will ever go back together. Anyone ever pull all the glass off a 66 charger and put it back on? I need a mentor on this part of the restore.

Thank you.

I am not sure how they come out, but I do know you should be very careful because they are not tempered safety glass like the windshield. they will shatter like you said, and they are expensive.....at least they are for my car......Could yo post a pic of your car, and what you are working on. Maybe I could help more if I could see it. Somebody on here will know.

There is a plug that attaches the glass to the mechanism. This plug is probably blue (faded by this point). It has 4 "legs" with a lip on the outside of each. This pushes through the glass. Then there is a center "button" that pushes in and makes the legs expand, thus locking the plug in place. You will need to remove these plugs before you can remove the glass.

I almost told him to give you a yell, next time I will.......

Thank you. I will look for the plugs. I did not see anything like that there.

I will post pics soon. I was thinking of doing a documented restoration for this car on this forum. It is a '66 charger that I got for $800. It needs a ton of help. It will never be a numbers matching car, but it will be a very nice car when done since I am doing a bottom up resto.

I intend to make a black on black mild resto mod with a very subtle pirate theme. I have a mild but sweet street build 440 just about done for it. The drive train is further along than the car. I have spent about 3 months of Sundays stripping it down to the body to prep it for soda blasting. The further I get the more bondo and rust I find. ;-(

I recently acquired a furnace setup. I intend to make my own custom emblems in the pirate theme etc.

Thank you for the tip. I will post back in a week or so and let you know how that works out.

Pirate theme? Cool! Cant wait to see it, be sure to post the pics.

Yeah, dido.

If you can pick up a copy of the 1966 Coronet and Dart Service manual, along with the Charger service manual supplement, it will give you everything you need to know about removing the door and quarter window glass and all of the related door and window parts, along with how to reinstall it all and also how to do all of the adjustments that will have to be done to allow the glass to be rolled up and down in their tracks and to seal up properly with the weatherstripping. Another must have when you're restoring any car, is a copy of the factory parts book for the model year you're working on.The parts book will give you all of the part numbers and illustrations that show you how various assemblies go together. If you need referrals to companies who sell these books, let me know and I will give them to you.

To answer the question on how the window glass is attached in the doors and quarter windows goes, I will assume that you have manual windows, rather than power windows, as some of the part numbers that I will post below are for the manual windows only.

The front door glass has one white plastic rivet (1966 part #6023546) on each window. This rivet goes through the the window lift bracket first (1966 part #2664256, passenger and driver sides) then goes through the window lift bracket gasket (1966 part #2217351 passenger and driver sides) then through the window glass. If you're careful, you might be able to remove these plastic rivets without breaking them, but if you do break them, or if they were already damaged, no big deal, as you can buy them from several aftermarket Mopar retailers such as R/T Specialties, Year One, and many others. Please see the listing I posted below for this rivet from R/T Specialties, along with a link to their web site. You can find these rivets in the "hardware" section.. The lift brackets are metal, so other than having a little surface rust, they should be no problem, but the lift bracket gaskets are a die cut material that looks to be made out of some kind of heavy paper product and most likely will be damaged from age and exposure to the elements, so try to be careful with the gaskets, because as far as I know, they are not being reproduced. I do have two of these nos gaskets that I will be using on my 66 Coronet 500, so if you need these, I might be able to make a template of these and you could make new ones yourself if needed.

The rear quarter window glass is a bit more complicated to remove, so if you want more information on this, please e-mail me at [email protected] or pick-up a copy of the service manual for this process ok?

Awesome data. Thanks.

I did manage to remove the parts and glass from inside the rear quarters. I never did find any plugs though. I just removed every nut from the interior panel, pulled the two sliders and a couple remaining internal parts down and out through the bottom then did a contortionists move to pull the glass and its assembly out through the top.

I have not yet removed the door glass, but just so far removed the door and garaged it. I still need another door and fender before I can soda blast the body. A hood arrived a couple days ago.

The rear quarter glass does not seem to be held by any plug, but rather just a compression fit rubber seal along the bottom.

I just have to remove the rear glass and then the k frame and axles and build some sort of rotisserie to be fully ready to blast.

Photos will be coming within a week. The poor car needs everything. I have been learning to blast and paint on small projects like bikes and tools. I still have to sort out how to do the body work. This should be a blast. I have been enjoying it so far.

I definitely need a factory parts blow out guide. There is no way I will remember where each thing should be.

Great to hear that you were able to safely remove your quarter windows Scott. As I mentioned above, picking up a factory Service Manual and Parts Book will REALLY help you understand how to disassemble and reassemble the various parts on your car.

I have posted below a listing for the 1966 Charger factory shop Supplemental Service Manual, along with the listing for the 1966 Coronet & Dart factory Shop Service Manual that you will also need. They also sell the Parts Books. The companies name that these listing are from, is LLoyds Automobile Litrature and the link to their web site is http://www.lloydsautolit.com/ They are licensed by Chrysler to sell these books and I have purchased several books from them in the past and have been very happy with their customer service and the quality of their books. I hope this helps you out and please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with ok? :)

I've seen people use hammers, or something to beat the center plug out of the plastic retainer and break the glass. I use end cutters to grip it and pull it out. Works great for me.

For those plugs I made a slide hammer kinda thing. Screwed it in to the plug part, then popped it out.
