I'm trying to get the axels out of my 64 polara. I'm not familiar with the castle bolt and hub style. Does anyone have some input as to how I should go about taking these out. All help is appreciated.

Looks like a job for a BFH....( big friggin hammer).

Actually I thing a big frigging puller would be better

Could be. I would tap on both sides on th back repeatedly and see if it lets loose. if not a puller would be better than smashing it with to much force.

Do not under any circumstances hit that thing with a hammer. Use the correct puller or you will ruin the Hub. The hubs cannot be replaced. Nobody makes them. The only place you might be able to find one would be in a wrecking yard. You don't want to go there. Get the correct puller to pull those hubs off. Then you can pull the axles out.

I had the same problem
I picked up a BIG and OLD Snap-On puller plus heated it up

As stated, the way to go is with a hub puller, or in your case even a 3 prong gear puller could possibly be used as somebody has converted yours to slip off drums (originally your drums and hubs are held together by the swaged wheel studs thus riveting them together.)

I have heard folks say to get the hubs off without a puller is to remove split pins, loosen nuts until they just not touching hub, refit split pins and drive in tight figure 8s in a car park until the hubs pops off the taper. I would not be game a it sound a little barbaric, but has anybody here tried it?

I learned the hard way not to use a large 3 prong puller to pull from the outer dia of the drum - it worked OK on one side, but on the other I bent my drum. Oh well, it made me get new slip on drums and replace the studs same as yours have been done.

Save yourself a lot of grief, and use only this type of puller. Be sure not to "mushroom" or bugger up the threads on the end of the axle. And be CAREFUL ! sometimes when that hub lets go, it will come flying off of there...............................MO

those axles are tapered. I got one of those pullers specific for the tapered axles. pm me if you would want to buy it I no longer have any use for it.

I retract my comment about the big hammer. I clearly am ignorant of the specifics of this model.

What do is back the nut off 2-3 turns Then find an area where you can do some figure 8s Not fast! they will break free! That's if the car is moving under it's own power! From the pic. looks like your is apart!

Doctor Differential has axel shafts and brake assemblies to replace those tapered axel 64 parts using you existing axle housing. The cost was around 600 dollars but that was a few years ago. Not bad cost when you compare rebuilding all the old stuff you currently have now.

Someone has converted his drums so they can be taken off the hubs. Hubs are on a tapered axle with a key way. . If that hub has been taken off within the past few years, it may not be so hard to get them off now.
Those axles were pretty strong, I just never liked the looks of them poking out from the wheel. I also think a sure grip in them was pretty rare. ..............................MO

And the only place you can get replacement parts is Dr. Differential? ............................MO

Thanks guys. Ill update tomorrow
I did this on one of my 62's. I won't say it was simple but without a lot of specialized tools I was able to do it myself. It worked out GREAT!!

Much more simple and inexpensive compared to changing the entire rear axle assembly. You can reuse the drums you have if they don't need to be replaced.
