I am going to look at a 1972 440 PI engine. What will be stamped on the block? Does this motor differ from other 440's?

Thanks for any input!:confused::confused:

I know the 68&69s had bigger cams stiffer springs double roller timing chains hv oil pump and and a little more comp.and would make a 454chev look for a hole...

There is no such thing as a "Police interceptor engine" for Mopars of that vintage. The police packages were about suspension, brakes, and H.D. seats, etc. You could order a police car with a /6, 318. 383, or 440. It could have been an HP or a std. 440.

Not to be picky, but Police Interceptor was a Ford term. I believe for Mopar it was called Police Pursuit (but I might be wrong). It might have included a Sure Grip, but never a "Posi". :tongueflap: :)

................yes they were a HP engine...............magnum cam+lifters...........roller chain.........hp oil pump, ........windage tray............even up 2 1978.................kim............

Who an what are you responding to?

Yes, you COULD order a cop car with an HP engine or a /6. What you are describing above is the standard HP engine which was available in a regular passenger car, it was NOT specific to a police car.

And just to be clear, the OP was asking about a 1972 model.

Look on the front pad on the driver's side of the block infront of the valley pan. You should find H440, an assembly date and you may or may not find an HP stamp.

The HP assembly had some things the non-HP assembly did not such as the windage tray and a different cam but if you are going to rebuild the motor, it doesn't matter.

Good luck.

Did the 72 HP's have the sixpack rods? And if they did, wouldn't that mean it would have the bigger balancer? Just asking if these are things the OP should be looking for....

Some did some didn't. No rhyme or reason.

That term "sixpack rods" is an oxymoron and something we should make an effort to get away from using. It is one of the terms that proliferates a myth. a 440 engine is just a 440 unless you can tie the V.I.N. to a known complete V.I.N. that tells you what the engine was when it left the factory.:tongueflap:

So then the six-pack rods were no different than "regular" 440 rods??

i know a 69 1/2 6 pack has an M code on the V.I.N., but is that all that differentiates a 6-pack vs. a regular 440? (well, besides the 3 carbs?)

It is really confusing.

the first six pack cars had standard 440 rods in 1969. In 1970 they began putting the heavier (six pack rods) in many of the 440s and someone coined the phrase. As the years went on they phased out the old lighter rods. These heavier rods were NEVER 440 six pack specific.

In 1969 the six pack engines were basically the same as the 440/375 HP engine with the six pack induction, but they did also have the Hemi valve springs. The car "worked" basically because it was set up with a Dana 4.10 only. The combination of the induction and the gears made it a race ready street racer "out of the box" that was hard to compete with on the street, which was EXACTLY what Mopar planned it to be.

It is confusing....

more than anything, why would you make the rods that worked fine, heavier??? 440 rods are plenty beefy from what i've seen, and making them heavier adds more rotating mass, dragging down horsepower...

it really doesn't make sense

OOPS. Sorry. I'm an old guy and grew up with the sixpack rod term. Next time I will just refer to the heavy honking rods that also happened to come in motors with multiple carbs.......
Now if you don't mind I will go spin the pinion on my posi and make sure I have a grip on how many times my wheels turn......

Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do...but damn that's gotta be tough!!

Ain't so bad, I don't have to think when I go to work......:rolling:

Not to mention that I have a few customers that like real cars and have actually been able to play with some aluminum Hemi's.
