how do you tell if the rubber rag joint. vibration damper type deal right on the steering column shaft is bad. its made of rubber and dont have the money to replace it and if i do im going to get that shaft from flaming river and eliminate the whole damn thing. but if it is not bad i dont want to waste my money on a new one. t

The only part that is "rubber" is the seal that you see under the crimped on lid

rag joint

well then what the hell is the rag joint made out of. i dont think they used these on the older mopar just the 73 and above i believe. it looks like it is made out of rubber to me. ill post a pic. it has like a steel shield over it. below the coupler

Oops.....are you talking about the round looking thing and not the piece that attaches the column to the box?

yes that is correct. i cant even find replacement rag joints like that. does that control the steering or is there still bolts inside of there that connect it together. can i get by without replacing that.

I'm gonna have to defer to the forum, cause I've never had to replace one.

GENTLEMEN??? A little schoolin please

I think I replaced the one in my 73 Charger with a generic from an auto parts store and used all the original hardware (bolts, straps, cover, etc.). It has been years since I bought the part but I just had it apart for K member repair and it all looks fine. My setup looks just like the one in 268RTs4ME's diagram.

thanks alot guys

hey guys i sure do appreciate it. i need to rebuild mine on a budget so im gonna try to find this stuff at napa. ill keep you guys updated on what you can get and stuff. thanks again.

Rag Joint

I would also look at www.flamingriver.com for other options. I saw one in a 79 Dodge truck light on fire after some harsh 4 wheelin'. We put it out..with a beer of course, and 'pop' it lit on fire again, another beer and 'pop' it was on fire again! Turned out a main power wire, I think for the starter, had worn through from touching the steering column and was grounding through the rag joint and the box!!! One of the strangest things I ever saw!

When I did the big motor swap on my 73 Runner one of my header tubes hit that big sheild around the coupler. Mine was one big ugly deal made to reduce vibration through the column. It really wasn't like any "Rag joints" that I had come across before. I ended up making a new coupler out of a 1/4" thick aluminum spacer I had lying around the shop.
It's my "billet" addition to my car.

rag joint

im looking to replace my rag joint i just cant figure out y my car wont stay on the road over 50 mph every thing is tight my only thing i can think of is the gear box might be shot!!!!! any way i took it apart and completley difrent from my 74 rr in my 73 its a thik piece of rubber with metal inserts molded into the rober where the bolts go through but where does somone find this pice only one ive seen is on ebay for 199.99 that just nuts!!! for a pice of rubber?? go figure so any one have any ideas i took it a part again and the first time it was completley gone as far as deteriated and broke apart in my hands i had a used one that i had laying around but seems to me not much better all i know i need to figure somthing out be for i kill my self driving it or somone else any help would be appreciated thanks every one

I just used this

http://bouchillonperformance.com/BPE2119.asp

This is an older picture and the price is actually 119.00.

It is now made out of billet aluminum. I have no issues with it so far. Got rid of that heat sheild for header clearance.
