Rebuilding the 383 & looking for a high quality Hemi Orange paint, preferably in aerosol. I like to degrease with brake cleaner, so that's a requirement. Who sells good engine paint ? Thanks, Rocket ?

I got mine at Autozone. High temp Hemi orange engine paint.

CAP, sells plastikote as do other places, lol. I use their primer and their paint, it is niceeee stufffff..

228 is the primer, 226 is the hemi orange, also I buy the silver aluminum and black which I believe are 207 and 230

I stopped using the dupli color and the napa because they are not as easy to get perfect, vs the plastikotes, I have had to sand, and retouch too much stuff with them, with the plastikote, I wipe the stuff down with reducer, then tack coat the primer, wait 5 minutes hammer the primer, wait 20 minutes tack the color, then keep covering until its uniform and thick... plastikote like thing coats..

Seventy: Who is CAP ? Thanks.
consumer auto parts , its a chain store of sorts, may be some near you, you can use the find a dealer link on plastickotes website, thats actually how I found it at caps... amazon also sells it...

1971 charger se 383, going to have my intake manifold and exhaust manifold sand blasted. I decided on the MOPAR brand paint. What process the process for painting? What primer should be used? And can I use the same paint on the exhaust manifolds. The exhaust manifolds should be painted the same color as well correct?

I use DuPont Centari with lead!
this stuff is great, but think it can be bought anymore.

just went thru the plasticote 226 stuff. thought it was a far cry from what it used to be. in fact i thought it was CRAP!

Is that a high temp that can be used on both the intake and exhaust? What primer did you use?
Didn't use primer! Just super clean, real good rinse, blow dry and it lays out nice.

I use mopar orange. With a fresh build, I use etching-primer on the bare metal....then apply the orange. All my go-fast stuff is gloss-black.

I use the plastikote and I have never had a problem with it, like with anything clean it good, wash it with degreaser, then I wipe it down really good with Xylol Xylene (I have really good results with using it over lacquer thinner when using rattle can paints, its like lacquer thinner but I think its for enamels, vs lacquer thinner is for lacquer ....

I park the parts next to my heater and make sure they are nice and warm as is the spray paint, then a thin tach coat, then a cover coat, then hammer it.. In 3 coats It hardens like a rock, holds up and the color is nice.
Plastikote is IMO one of the better rattle cans available, I have tried them all since I have to go out of my way to get plastikote, its not in all the large stores, but I stock up, I have a couple cases of the semi orange, and they have another can that is really close (closest I seen) to silver argent (#621), I have done grills, wheels, bezels, etc with it and I love the stuff...

ITS ALL IN THE PREP, take your time, make sure your clean, dry, and warm, tach coat, cover coat, and coat until you are happy.. I do 10-15m before coats except after the tach coat I don't wait very long...

good luck, I have painted maybe 25 engines with plastikote rattles and never an issue, I couldn't begin to count how many cans of their products I have burnt through...

prep is the key. Lot of people dont realize, for cast iron, is how much water is in cast iron pores. I heat, even with a propane torch, and flash off the moisture before I prime or paint the metal. paint adhesion is better done this way. also paint absorbsion into pores and curing is better when 'warm', not hot mind you.

I used Eastwood (w a gun) on this one, although it was a bit thin. I would primer it first before I did it again.

The hemi I did with allis chalmers rustoleum (spray can). Looked really good and held up very well. It's dirty here but just came out of the car after several years. Rustoleum also makes a hemi orange but it doesn't look to be formulated as good as the chalmers orange.

Allis Chalmers is too light, looks like Chevy hugger orange. Try POR or vht. Great tractors but not a Chrysler orange
