Here's one the purists may not like: Hellcat Hemi in a 1970 Superbird: The Hellbird!

I was in contact with this guy a couple months ago, he's the one who bought the Hellcat "crate motor" off Facebook. I put that in quotes because, according to my friend at Chrysler, that was never a crate motor, it was a replacement engine and required a VIN to be sold. But, going with the 'possession is 9/10 of the law' rule, he kept the engine despite Chrysler wanting it back.

So what did he do with it? He's putting it into a 1970 Superbird with a GM 4L85e transmission. I know, purists are hating this because the car is getting some cutting to fit things properly, but in the end I think it's going to be a helluva car! It should be more than 707HP after he gets it tuned by HP Tuners - Jay is the man there!

Imagine a 700+ HP Hellcat Hemi in a car meant to go over 200mph!

I have NO problem with it!
It's still a 70 Superbird but I wish he would sell it to me so I could put my 70 hemi in that instead of my 70 Superbee!

Probably went for the GM tranny because they're plentiful, small enough to fit, and the aftermarket is there with the parts for this 6 speed auto to handle 1000 hp.

Photon440 is right, there isn't an overdrive option for a small block pattern other than the 518, and the 518 wouldn't be able to handle the power output of the Hellcat Hemi. There are a slew of companies making adapters for the GM electronic overdrives for both small and big block Mopars.

People are having issues with the new 8 speed: there are so many sensors that are on the Hellcats that if you don't take everything (suspension sensors, diff sensor, brake sensors, etc.) it won't work... at least that's what I've been told. The new 8 speed needs to have all the computers and sensors because they're dependent upon all information. Otherwise, he would have done that too... if he could buy one! The hellcat trans is not the same as the Scat Pack, and technically he was never supposed to buy this engine - that was a bit of a fluke.

I'm kind of a purist. Not a fan of this happening to (what I'm guessing is) an original, very rare vehicle.
Build a clone/tribute and hack that up.
Or not. Do what you want, it's your car.

Interesting to see the top end on this creation. The #88 ran over 200 with "only" 585 HP, per Larry Rathgeb.
