So I've decided that I want to go with an RO-style hood scoop on my '67 Satellite. I will buy a scoop separate from the hood, cut a hole in the hood, and graft the hood scoop on since no one sells an RO fiberglass hood.

What I'm wondering is, would it be better to use one of these Moroso air pan kits that seals the carb to the hood:

If I use one of these, it seems like you can't run an air cleaner since they are only 12" wide. So it looks like I would have to run from the scoop straight into the carb with no air cleaner.

Or, should I just cut a circle in the hood a little bit bigger than a 14" diameter air cleaner and run a big 4" high air cleaner sticking through the hood?

What do you guys think would be the way to go for a street/strip car? It doesn't seem like it would be that great an idea to run on the street a lot with no air cleaner on to me. Any ideas or pics for me? Thanks!

I just rivited a big piece of aluminum to an air cleaner bottom and attached the foam to it with 3M weatherstrip adhesive.

What I do is just run an air filter on the street. But when I get to the track to race I put the pan on and leave the air filter out for just the few passes I make. Then put it right back in before I leave the track. Ron

That's what I was thinking I would have to do too. Thanks.

What I did on my swinger was use a piece of aluminum, bent up 3/8 all round to keep it stiff. Then cut the hole in the middle so it fits onto the carb. Then the foam gasket from Summit was glued onto the aluminum so it would fit snug under the hood. The piece comming through the hood was just to finish it off all "perdy like" it was not really needed.
You can also use your bottom drop base plate and pop rivet the square aluminum piece to that if the air cleaner sits up to high

Thanks guys! Ram, your setup is the other direction I'm thinking of going. Which way do you guys think would ET better, going through an air cleaner sealed to scoop or no air cleaner sealed to scoop?

An air cleaner may reduce turbulance. Try it with and without. That's my plan this spring

cool dense air

Getting cool/dense air & fuel is the name of the game... IMHFO you will get more of a potential "ram air" effect, with out the air cleaner element, if it has a smooth path with out a bunch of sharp edges to effect air flow, but it will basically pressurize & equal out probably, at one point or another at some speed... at the track & I would go with out the air cleaner/filter, but on the street use an air cleaner for sure, allot safer that way... But IMHFO if you use a X-treme K&N or other gauze type air cleaner/filter & top/lid, it probably will not be much different up-to about 100mph, good for the 1/8 mile anyway, keep stuff out of the engine too... you will probably have to re-jett for it some too, more air going thru leaner mixture, but after that 100mph point your loosing some of the potential "ram air" effect, with an air cleaner element on, even a K&N X-treme, I would think, but probably a nominal amount thou... IMHFO isolating the heat from going into the intake charge/or heat soaking the carburetor & fuel, is probably just as important as the "ram air" effect of the scoop, I would isolate your fuel lines/fuel-system from under-hood heat as much as possible too... good luck & keep us posted...
