Hot power steering pump

I took my 64 Sport Fury for a drive around town today, and when I got back the power steering pump was too hot to touch. It 'll works good. I looked in the top, and the fluid was full. I should have shot it with my infrared thermometer, but didn't. I guess it was at least 180° f. Is that too hot?
 
Not really... some times the idler arm will get tight and cause the heat... old fluid will cause heat and headers will over heat the system.... you can put a cooler on the return line if it seems hotter than normal.
 
That's about the same temp as everything else under the hood. Why would you expect it to be cooler than the engine?
 
I will shoot the temp of it. I could touch the radiator, not non stop but for a few seconds. But the power steering pump would have burned my skin. I had to use a rag to open it, and it was still hot. So my guess of 180° is probably low.
 
OK, I went out to the shop the shop and started it up. Just let it idle for 15 minutes or so. The front of the pump (cast iron part) read 235°, and the return hose was at 195°. The steering wasn't being worked at all, just sitting there. My idle speed is at 850 R.P.M.s. I have stock pulleys on it. Anybody else took the temperature of ther pumps?
 
Been doing a little studying on this,and it might just be the fluid I'm using. Just put in AutoZone brand. So what are you all using? I wonder if I should just use atf? Read a article by Cardon that said they tested different brands. Some of the brands had the pumps going over 300°.
 
Did your pump run hot before changing fluid? With belt off does it take extra effort to rotate pulley? These coolers make for a neat installation and come from a great vendor:

Don't know about being hot before. I built this car from the ground up. I am going to put ATF in it and take its temperature just for my own information. If it's still hot I'll put a cooler on.
 
I've been doing research on PS pumps because I've having trouble with my 64 S.F. pump -- but not the temperature. Go to this site link by Cardone. They say 180 degrees is about right.

Everywhere I've looked says to use the proper fluid -- usually the one recommended by the manufacturer. I would definitely NOT use AT fluid.

What is the recommended fluid? Up until about 10 or 15 years ago I didn't know it was even made. Maybe it will tell me in my service manual. If I get a chance today I will take a look. In the end I'm sure it will get the cooler, but I can't resist checking some different fluids for the fun of it.

Well before I could do any thing, my fuel pump quit. so I'll have to fix that before any testing. I'll take 62MAX's advice and get a better power steering pump fluid. I see a lot of people are using red line PS fluid.
