How do I get these frozen rear brake drums off 68 Satellite?

Car has been sitting in a yard for 40 years and I have it now trying to make a roller of it. I usually PB blast the brake drums down and then just bang and pry on the drum until they are free or off but this one I am going no where and can budge them. Is there a drum puller or something that is made to maybe get them off that way? I have the drive shaft disconnected and these things are just really rusted on tight. I cant move the adjuster neither. Everything is frozen solid.
 
There is no tool to my knowledge.
Drums are easy to replace I would be tempted to get out the disc grinder.

That's what I was thinking and looked at it. Just wondering if there is enough lip for the jaw to hang onto when I do it. Have to see if I have one. Suppose harbor freight has them??
 
dig out and cut the head off the pins
that hold the brake shoes on to the backing plate
they will then fall off
no need for a puller :fool:
I have the harbor puller and it didn't work
on a rotor that I ended up cutting off the rotor down to
the bearing race off of the spindle
it did work on some drums so its a 50/50 shot with it.
I could live without having it. another waste of money

Try this an old timer told me this. Take the ball end of ball peen hammer put it between wheel studs. With another heavy hammer the BP hammer. Do it between each wheel studs.

Harbor Freight is junk, I broke 3, before I just got my money back. A friend loaned me one from back in the day to pull the drums on my 56 Desoto Wagon. That setup is different from my situation so you may be able to find something to work.

yeah drum is frozen stuck solid in place
most of the time the problem is the shoe lining rusting in to the drum
so stop fighting it.

go behind the backing plate and dig around for the pin heads
that hold the brake shoes on to it.
there are usually 4
you have had to of done drum brakes before?
and must know what i'm talking about
it will be tight
but you can get in there and pry them up with a screw driver and cut the
head of the pin off off with a Dremel or even grind it away if you have to.
just did it to a Oldsmobile that ran but sat for 6 or 7 years
rear wheels were frozen solid and crap puller or
beating the living **** out of it wasn't doing it.

Useing a puller can be hazardous to your health and will more than likely bend the drum's center.

The video above gives you at least three good ways of doing this.
 
As Frank stated the drum puller is a 50/50 shot....Have you loosened the adjusters a bit?

Cutting the retainer pins as Frank mentioned is a great idea I never tried.....
 
Hit the face of the drum between the studs with a 3lb sledge. Use pb blaster and keep hitting it. It will come off.

it happens soo much
I don't even screw around or waste my time anymore
if a drum laughs at a good beating or the puller
I go straight for the pins
wasted a lifetime of beating rusty crap apart and getting too old for it.

Did that Old Timer have both eyes that worked? If I was caught hitting the face of a hammer head (think harden) with another hammer's face (think harden), I was told I'd be fired. And yes I have one hammer with a chipped face. Some how just now with this subject, I remember striking the two faces together and a chunk of metal broke off the face and lodged in to the web between my thumb and index finger. These were good old hammers.

that is one shortfall I have is no fire wrench :(
even with the puller there comes a point
where you are just starting to destroy stuff
the same with beating.

I have fought the worst
wheels that won't even come off a 3 year old car
to cars that sat for 40 years
people around here drive thru the bay flood waters
cut those pins off, it falls in your lap every time
I have only had to do it a few times but
it sure saves you a lot of wasted effort when nothing else is working.

If your just trying to get it to roll again, use a big long handle sledge and have at it. Put the lug nuts on in case you miss and hit a stud. The shoes are probably rusted to the drum and or the emergency brake was applied and the cable is rusted stuck too.
 
Cheap grinder with a cut off wheel. Cut that sucker right off
