so heres the deal im picking up a 8 3/4 rear end from a guy he says is a 3.23 sure grip and says its a 489. how do i confirm its a sure grip without pulling the damn thing apart. also he says it came out of a 73 charger. If anyone has this info it would be great thanks.

Sure grip is one piece center section with 2 spider gears. Heavier duty unit is Power Lock which is 4 spider gears and 2 piece center section. Power lock is top of line Dana Posi. Suire grip is standard duty usually found in 8 3/4 housings.

If the third member is in the housing and the axles are installed turn one axle and see if the other turns the same direction. Even better if you apply resistance to one axle while trying to turn the other. If no axles you can tell a power lock SG by looking down the axle tube into where the splines are and seeing a small shiny round disc about 1/2" in diameter. The cone type SG unit doesn't use the small buttons thus making it hard to ID from the axle tube. But I will caution you that if you are spending good money for this pull the third member and verify it. I have seen where someone had welded the spider gears on an open carrier and sold it as a Ford 9" track lock.

If you spin one of the axles and the other spins the same direction, it's a suregrip. If it doesn't spin, or spins the opposite direction, it's an open rear.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Damn, beet me to it meep.

Ok its is all together drum to drum and I'm meeting.the guy on the side of the highway as he's driving through so I'm saving some driving so taking it apart isn't an option. I will try the same direction spin trick. The guy sellst i parts ay swap meets.its not that I don't trust him but somone could have told him that's what it is and was wrong.

Very simple. It takes two people. Have one person hold the drive shaft yoke still. See if the other person can turn one of the axles. If you can, it's just an open differential. If you cannot, it's a sure grip.

I've been fooled by this method before too. The one I found turned both drums in the same direction. Turns out it was so rusted up inside that it was locked together.....and this was 35 years ago! Is he willing to refund your money if it's not what he says it is? And whenever I sell a rear end, I stencil it someplace to ensure I'm getting back what I sold if that should ever happen and I usually put that on the right side spring pad.

I generally try to remove the drums to take them out of the equation.

I usually do too and I also take along a couple of bars to try and rotate the axles using some force. With the exception of the rusted one I got, it's always worked and have never messed up any lugs but if you do, they are cheap compared to getting burned for a worn out SG or getting non SG setup.

I saw title of thread and first thing that popped into my head was "punch it" LOL that's just me :3gears:

Well I now have my 8 3/4 sure grip the first part of my 440 conversion. No more one wheel peel lol.
