How many big block 4 - speed trannys does Chrysler make?

Been doing my motor upgrade this week and noticed my tranny seal was leaking, ordered one locally and it does not fit. Ended up working with a contact my mechanic friend has in New Jersey. She said and I quote " it is a hemi trans" I thought the 440's and Hemis had the same 4 speed behind them?

440 4 speed, and 426 hemi 4 speed cars used the 18 spline 4 speed. Most of the time called "hemi 4 speed"
383's got the 23 spline.

I wonder why my local parts stores don't carry the correct seal?

Maybe because it is for a 46 year old car ?

yeah, then there is that. Almost everything for this upgrade came from Summit or Jegs

There should be no difference with input shaft seals for the 833, just the OD of the shaft retainer changes for application and 18/23 spline. Also, as far as I remember, there is only the large seal for the output shaft, especially for the bigblock tranny.

The input shaft seals are different between a 23 spline and 18 spline. The output shaft seals are the same.

Didn't your old seal have a number stamped into it? Any parts place should be able to cross that over to what you need..............................MO

if memory serves pre and post 70 23 splines input shaft retainer is diff ... 70 and later have larger front bearing and retainer diameter .. so probably seal too

I bet these people have the skinny on them....been so long since I've messed with 4 speeds that I simply don't remember. Getting old timers disease too...
