And, would it make a difference, as far as performance and/or mileage, to throw on a fiberglass hood instead on my '69 Satellite? Maybe even a trunk deck lid?

Maybe if I pull off the hood, trunk lid AND remove the back seat, MAYBE I'll be able to tell the difference! :toothy12:

Makes a difference in the looks department, that for sure. Going from a flat satty hood to a glass lift off sick pack hood. I love driving down the road with that big ol scoop sittin out there. I say go for it. Ya got nuthing to lose.

Well, yeah, if you're gonna change it for something different. That's a whole 'nuther issue.

My impression from the OP was that he wanted to replace the existing steel hood with a fibreglass copy of the same and was concerned about weight saving.

Unless you're trying to lose some ET on the strip or like the look of the lift off hood I'd pass.

Some of those aftermarket glass hoods are surprisingly heavy. I don't know the weight of the stock steel hood but I bet you won't have earth shattering results by going to glass. Just the cost to ship it may put you over the top. I have been thinking of the same thing lately - about putting my 66 Bel on a diet. I can remove the inner hood bracing and replace it with some aluminum components. Do the same with the bumper brackets. And glass bumper maybe? Remove under coating and 40 yrs of road dirt. Light weight mag wheels. Gut the doors. At some point it may be cheaper and easier to find the extra power. And yes, I also heard that 100 lbs = .1 sec = 10 HP.

One can go nuts thinking of stuff to remove so add it up before you start cutting. Weight of steel per cu in is .2904 lbs. To calculate sheet metal weight do this: Thickness in inches x .2904 x 144 = lbs. per square foot

Yeah I know they make a glass copy of my same hood, but I like the scoop a lot.
That is a heavyass piece of metal, that hood. Gotta be like 75-100 lbs. I know I get better mileage when the car isn't weighed down by 19 gallons of gas too. from half way to almost empty I've measured a 2-4 mpg gain. Maybe I'm on crack or something, but I keep pretty thorough records and thats what I've found at least. So, I figure, if I shave another 50-100 lbs I may grab an extra 1 or 2 mpg. Plus I do like the look of a glass hood. I'd probably go with http://www.andysautosport.com/plymouth/1968_1970_roadrunner/exterior/hoods/fiberglass_hoods/unlimited_products/eric00003943.html
