In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
So,as a thunderstorm raged(somewhat) outside, washing the snow away(to a snowmobiler, there are few sadder sights),I thought to myself: "Self, you should work on your car." One of my week-off projects was to remove the Offenhauser dual-quad/twin AFB intake setup. Sucked gas, didn't improve performance(mill is a '64 340hp Chrysler 413),and wasn't enjoyable to drive-for what little driving I did. After I sold my '76 Arctic Cat Z race sled,I bought an Edelbrock Performer 440 intake and found a 600cfm Eddy carb on Craigslist. It was time to install those pieces! I love you Ma Mopar-no coolant draining required! Take that you bow-tie boys!

Removal and install went trouble free. Had to drill a couple of holes in my square-bore(carb) to spread-bore intake adapter for brake vacuum(the 1/4-18NPT hole was drilled and tapped, but there were no holes to the venturis),got some plugs for the other tapped holes, did some quick fab work for the throttle and kickdown and went to fire it up. Yeah baby! After a little priming, she fired, and sat there and idled. It didn't want to do that with the old setup. Jabbed the pedal a couple of times to check movement and response and was very pleased! Still need to check the points and timing, but this should prove to be a MUCH better setup;can't wait to drive it and see how she runs. Gotta get a filter for the $5.00 Moroso air cleaner I scored at a garage sale and replace the small one. Hey,it keeps critters out for now.

Next project: THE HEADERS! Bwahaahaahaaha! Can't wait! Didn't use a lot of cuss words with the intake;I'm saving them for doing the pipes. Of course,I'll ask for advice-I love you guys!

Wait till you michigan guys see whats coming after the rains.Burrrrrrrr 30mph wind and 5 above.Nice work Al.

Thanks guys;no headers today. Gotta start spraying heavy applications of WD,PB,CRC and whatever else I can come up with to break exhaust bolts/nuts loose. Fortunately, the exhaust system on there is duals with Flowmaster 40's;on the car when I got it. Pipe is already 2 inch dia. all the way back, headers are 1-7/8,look like Hedmans, and the prior owner had them aluminized. Came off a '65 with a hot 383,so they should fit. I know I'm going to have to replace the starter with a smaller unit;any suggestions? Also need to get an "X"-pipe as well. Hopefully this will all be accomplished before driving season-which around here could be like,June,so there's time.

Wannadrag;been watching the Weather Channel and saw what's coming our way. Yikes;it's over 40 degrees here, and there's lake-effect snow pounding the west side and the UP. We've lost all our snow base over the last couple of days;time to start over.

SSR;if there was a built 440(or more) in there, that setup(my Offy/AFB) would not only have looked ol' skool kool but might have actually worked after some of your magic. I was planning on using a Holley Street Dominator and either a 750(or 850 if needed) Holley carb on that mill;gotta admit that the dual quad would peg the kool-o-meter when the hood got opened. I'll keep this in mind...

When I go for the header install,I'll post pics and of course questions. Like I said,I saved an inventory of good cuss words for that project;can't use them up all at once,ya know...

Don't think I've ever seen those old low rise Offys out perform the better single carb intakes. I've never tried one myself but have seen several guys that 'know what they are doing' try and end up taking them off. I mean, they did ok but were never great. And the pics that SSRACER posted are of intakes that are much better imo....

Looks a bit better now;repainted an old Moroso air cleaner setup I had and installed it. Looks like it belongs there. I can also add another 1/2" to my filter height;there is clearance,Clarence. Got an idea for using a 3-way(no,Mar-Par;not Jayme Langkford(sp?) and one of her friends-though that had crossed my mind...) snowmobile choke lever/apparatus to engage the cable that I'd like to install. Still too many puddles(with salty water) on the roads to take her out for a drive. I got da fever, and the only cure is...some drive time!
